Manipur News: The gruesome video that shows two Kuki Zo women being paraded naked and were allegedly ‘brutally-raped’ by a mob consisting of Mettei men, has attracted mass outcry for more reasons than one. The first being, why investigation and arrests were not made in the case when faces of the perpetrators were clearly visible in the video? The incident allegedly took place on 4 May, a day after violence broke out in Manipur between the minority Kuki community and the Hindu majority Meitei community.

FIR registered in connection with the parading of two women naked in Manipur, charged that before abducting them, a group of armed men came to the village in Kangpokpi district and torched and looted houses, attacked people killing some besides sexually assaulting women. The FIR, a copy of which is available with PTI, claimed that one person was killed by the mob as he tried to protect his sister from being raped on May 4 before the two were paraded naked and molested in front of others. «Around 900-1000 persons carrying sophisticated weapons like AK rifles, SLR, INSAS and .303 rifles forcefully entered our village… in Island subdivision, Kangpokpi district, about 68 km south from Saikul police station. »The violent mob vandalised all the houses and burnt them to the ground after looting all the moveable properties," the FIR lodged at Saikul police station claimed. They took away cash, furniture, electronic items, foodgrains, furniture and cattle heads, it said. The mob also snatched away five people who were rescued by police personnel from a nearby forest, the FIR claimed.

The portal www.violation-reporting.in will help the Union Health Ministry collate information and take swift action on reported violations, an official source told PTI. The Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes (Production, Manufacture, Import, Export, Transport, Sale, Distribution, Storage and Advertisement) Act (PECA) came into force in 2019. Hindustan Times notes that a case was not registered in the heinous incident at the time owing to ‘communal tension’ in the state. After the video went viral, Manipur Police later took suo moto cognizance of the video on July 19 and informed that a case had been registered on charges of abduction, gang rape and murder at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in the Thoubal district.
