Manipur News: The gruesome video that shows two Kuki Zo women being paraded naked and were allegedly ‘brutally-raped’ by a mob consisting of Mettei men, has attracted mass outcry for more reasons than one. The first being, why investigation and arrests were not made in the case when faces of the perpetrators were clearly visible in the video? The incident allegedly took place on 4 May, a day after violence broke out in Manipur between the minority Kuki community and the Hindu majority Meitei community.
However, authoritarian action in the matter only fact-paced itself after a video became viral on Wednesday. Several sub-narratives have since arisen accentuating and adding to the chain of events that took place.
However, question still remained that how could two women be taken away when police officials were escorting them to safety. Further, how could such a heinous crime take place two kilometres away from a police station and yet it took more than two months for police officials to take action? A senior police official of the Manipur Police has attributed the reason to ‘lack of evidence’.
Four people have now been arrested by the Manipur Police following the huge outcry and criticism for the lack of action on the part of Chief minister N Biren Singh, and the Manipur Police.
