Credit quality outlook of India Inc positive in first half of FY25: Crisil Ratings
Crisil Ratings on Monday said the credit quality outlook for Indian corporates remains positive for the April-September period of the 2024-25 fiscal year with upgrades continuing to outpace downgrades. In the last fiscal year, Crisil gave 409 rating upgrades and 228 downgrades. Some export-linked sectors, such as textile and seafood, saw a higher downgrade rate due to subdued global demand or high-cost inventory that impacted profitability. «India Inc's credit quality outlook is positive for the first half of fiscal 2025 with upgrades expected to outnumber downgrades. Multiplier effect of government capex will continue to drive infrastructure and linked sectors. Healthy balance sheets will continue to support the credit quality outlook, with capex funding seen prudent,» Crisil Rating said. It said the outstanding bank credit is expected to cross Rs 200 lakh crore by March 2025, from Rs 172 lakh crore a year ago, even though there would be moderation in the rate of credit growth.

Quebec Tim Hortons franchisees sue brand owner for almost $19M
Several Quebec Tim Hortons franchisees are taking the brand’s owner to court, blaming what they describe as unreasonable constraints in the company’s licensing agreements for lower-than-expected profits. In a lawsuit filed in Quebec Superior Court on Thursday, 16 companies with Tim Hortons franchise licences allege the TDL Group Corp.’s contracts “place it in a position of absolute dominance” over their combined 44 restaurants.“Through these Tim Hortons licence agreements … TDL controls every essential lever involved in the running of a restaurant,” from deals with suppliers to equipment,” the plaintiffs allege in their application.TDL also sets prices for both menu items and the ingredients restaurants need to make them, the lawsuit contends.Yet TDL’s policy of fixing prices didn’t adapt to the market, the franchisees assert. They argue the franchisor’s rules leave them “no room for maneuver” and impose costs they are unable to match in sales.

Top jewellery chains shy away from lab-grown diamonds amid lack of consumer interest
Kalyan Jewellers, Tanishq, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Joyalukkas and Senco Gold are staying away from lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) citing low demand and an aversion to mixing them with natural stones at counters. Nonetheless, the buzz over such stones — much cheaper than natural diamonds and indistinguishable from them — is getting louder, with higher sales in markets such as the US and government stimulus budgeted in India. Top retailers still feel the local market is not yet ready to accept LGDs like the US, as artificial diamonds are popularly considered fashion jewellery and not an asset with resale value.

iFOREST study reveals Assam's surging renewable energy potential, surpassing prior assessments by govt agencies
iFOREST), a prominent environmental research think tank, released new research findings showing that Assam is blessed with significantly higher renewable energy (RE) generation potential than previously assessed by central government agencies. The reassessed RE potential is adequate to support a low-carbon pathway to meet the state's growing electricity demand. While an increased commitment to RE projects is already visible in the state, there are limitations to growth that need to be addressed through policy tightening and institutional capacity building. The research reports titled «Assam Renewable Energy Potential Reassessment: Focus on Solar, Wind, and Biomass,» «Enabling Renewable Energy Growth in Assam,» and «Impact of ISTS Waiver on Economics of Solar Power Procurement in Assam» were released in Guwahati during a multi-stakeholder dialogue organized by iFOREST.
