nuclear-armed nations including the US, Russia, France, China, India and Pakistan, continued to modernise their nuclear arsenals and several of them deployed new nuclear-capable weapon systems in 2023, a Swedish think-tank said on Monday. In its analysis, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said China's nuclear arsenal increased from 410 warheads in January 2023 to 500 in January 2024, and it is expected to keep growing. The report said some 2,100 of the deployed warheads were kept in a state of high operational alert on ballistic missiles, and nearly all of them belonged to Russia or the US. However, for the first time China is believed to have some warheads on high operational alert, it said.

The opposition party hoped that when the new Standing Committees of Parliament gets constituted, it would take up an in-depth review of the NEET, NTA and NCERT. «I was a member of Parliament's Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare between 2014 and 2019 and recall broad support for NEET. But there were MPs, especially from Tamil Nadu, who had raised concerns that NEET would privilege CBSE students and would disadvantage youth coming from non-CBSE schools,» Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.

Acting on a tip-off regarding cow slaughter in the Bhainwahi area, police conducted a raid, leading to the discovery of cows captive for slaughter, and confiscated beef and other animal products from the accused. «A team was rushed there and we found 150 cows tied in the backyards of the accused. Cow meat was recovered from the refrigerators in the homes of all the 11 accused. We also found animal fat, cattle skin and bones, which were stuffed in a room,» Mandla Superintendent of Police Rajat Saklecha told PTI. «The local government veterinarian has confirmed the seized meat is beef. We have also sent samples to Hyderabad for secondary DNA analysis. The houses of the 11 accused were demolished as they were on government land,» the SP added.

The study has been published in the International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine. Bharat Biotech has dismissed the findings claiming the vaccine has been evaluated for safety. The study, co-authored by Jacob Puliyel, MD of the International Institute of Health Management Research, India, and Brian Hooker, chief scientific officer, Children's Health Defense, found that there was a 1.6-fold increase in the risk of intussusception in the vaccinated, which was missed in the earlier analysis.

While hearing separate petitions raising grievances over the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate)-2024, the apex court on Friday had sought responses from the Centre and the NTA on a plea for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into allegations of question paper leak and other irregularities in the exam.
