Joe Oliver: The Trudeau Liberals have eroded all five pillars of prosperity
Canada’s standard of living is in decline, both in absolute terms and compared to our southern neighbour and other wealthy countries. A Fraser Institute analysis shows that real GDP per capita was lower during the pre-recession period 2016-19 than in any similar period since 1985. As of the last quarter of 2023 it was below its value for 2019:Q2. It’s no surprise that 44 per cent of Canadians now say money is their leading source of stress.

Urbanisation led to 60% more night-time warming in Indian cities than non-urban areas: Study
night-time warming in over 140 prominent Indian cities compared to non-urban areas surrounding them, a new research from the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar has found. According to the research, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Rajkot had the highest urban effect, while Delhi-NCR and Pune were found to be at the fourth and fifth position, respectively. Urbanisation is known to be responsible for the urban heat island (UHI) effect, in which the concrete and asphalt (used in constructing roads and pavements) surfaces store heat during the day and release it in the evening, thereby raising night-time temperatures. Over time, this heat further affects other aspects of climate, including rainfall and pollution, researchers said in the study published in the journal Nature Cities.

Housing for all: Centre delivers on pace, but quality is the caveat
Mint analysis of the last seven years of data for PMAY-G (2017-18 to 2023-24), spanning both terms of the government, indicates the scheme was starkly back-loaded. Of the sanctioned 25.3 million houses in this period, 22 million have been built. Striking, nearly 68% of them were built in just three years —2019-20 to 2021-22 – and the pace has been slow in the past two fiscal years.

Buy or sell: Sumeet Bagadia recommends three stocks to buy on Monday - May 27
Buy or sell stocks: Despite finishing the week flat, the domestic benchmark indices, the Nifty 50 and the Sensex, had their best week since the beginning of February thanks to increases in metal and financial sectors.During the session, the Sensex reached a new all-time high of 75,636.50, but it was unable to maintain its gains and ended the day 8 points lower at 75,410.39. The Nifty 50 reached a new all-time high of 23,026.40 during the session, but finished the day 11 points down at 22,957.10.According to Prashanth Tapse, Research Analyst, Senior Vice President of Research at Mehta Equities, the Nifty 50's 23,000 milestone is something to celebrate, and the positive takeaway was that the benchmark ended a choppy session just a tad below the dotted lines, most importantly, shrugging off extremely weak overnight Wall Street cues.Buyers are seen confident amidst investors hoping or expecting continuation of the current regime in the general elections, and oil prices tumble towards $76 a barrel, said Tapse.

In charts: The times when ECI junked your votes and asked for a repoll
Earlier this month, the Election Commission of India ordered repolling at a polling station in Gujarat’s Dahod Lok Sabha constituency. The reason? A man had gone viral live-streaming while voting at the booth on 7 May, after which the poll body deemed the votes that had already been cast as worthless, and decided to repeat the process. The digital era may throw up new reasons for repolls, but the phenomenon isn’t new.

RBI’s huge surplus transfer: Largesse in need of an explanation
₹2.1 trillion, the surplus (note, not dividend, since RBI is not a commercial entity) is the highest-ever payout by the central bank, and more than double the previous year’s ₹86,416 crore. This is good news. Especially since the transfer has been done after beefing up RBI’s contingency risk buffer (CRB) to the upper end of the band (5.5-6.5% of its balance sheet) suggested by the 2019 Bimal Jalan committee.
