Man-made products - buildings, plastics - could be storing 8.4 bn tonnes of carbon, study estimates
carbon is estimated to have been accumulated and stored in long-lasting products from around the world made by humans, such as plastics and buildings, between 1995 and 2019, according to a study. Researchers at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands said this 'fossil carbon' added to the 'technosphere' — the sum of all human-made objects, both in use and discarded — equals around 93 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions from around the world in 2019. They added that the carbon locked up in the 'technosphere' has a huge potential to add to greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing the lifetime of products and recycling rates are two ways to reduce the amount of fossil carbon entering waste streams, the researchers suggested.

Two cosy trains set to hit the frosty Kashmir track
Indian Railways is set to bolster its connectivity to Kashmir with the likely launch of two new trains next month. The first is a centrally heated sleeper train, not a Vande Bharat as previously speculated, that will ply between New Delhi and Srinagar. Designed for a 13- hour journey, part of which traverses snow-capped mountain landscapes and crosses the iconic 359-m-high Chenab Bridge, the train promises enhanced comfort but will not include second-class sleeper accommodations, ET has learnt. The second train is an eight-coach Vande Bharat, featuring chair car seating, tailored for the shorter Katra-Baramulla route, according to a senior railway officer familiar with the plan.

India considers exempting gift vouchers from GST; Council to discuss key issues
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who arrived in Jaisalmer on Friday, will chair the 55th meeting of the council on Saturday. A government official familiar with the deliberations said the law panel under the council had recommended that gift vouchers be covered under the definition of prepaid instruments recognized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that are used as a consideration to settle an obligation. They would thus fall under a category that can't be taxed under GST.

Indian exporters See limited gains from Rupee depreciation
Indian exporters of garments, handicrafts, and engineering goods expect 5-10% gains from the rupee’s depreciation, but more import-dependent sectors such as gems and jewellery and electronics see rising oil and commodity prices offsetting any benefits, trade insiders said. Moreover, the sharper depreciation of the Chinese yuan, Japanese yen, and Mexican peso against the US dollar may prompt buyers to pressure Indian exporters to pass on the gains, besides undermining any long-term competitive advantage from the rupee’s fall, they said. The rupee hit an all-time low of 85.09 per dollar on Thursday, crossing the 85 mark for the first time. On Friday, the rupee hit a new low of 85.10/$1. Almost 60% of India’s goods trade is in dollars, and the depreciation will help traditional sectors such as textiles and leather.

Digital Competition Law unlikely before second half of FY26
digital competition law to regulate large players is unlikely to be finalised before the second half of the next fiscal, as the government intends to have comprehensive inter-ministerial consultations due to the complexity of the subject matter, people aware of the development said. The idea is to bring in such a law that would neither stifle innovation nor make compliances onerous but ensure that large players don't take advantage of their dominant positions to distort competition in the market, one of the officials involved with shaping the formal policy ET. «So, it would take some time,» the person added. Also, the corporate affairs ministry is currently focused on amending the insolvency and companies laws first, on top of scaling up the PM Internship Scheme.

Inflation-growth balance 'somewhat unsettled': Shaktikanta Das
inflation, especially in food items, dominated the discussions of the early December monetary policy review where two members voted for a rate cut, showed the minutes of the deliberations published Friday. The rate-setting panel, chaired by the then central bank governor Shaktikanta Das, kept policy rates unchanged amid demand for a reduction from two external members. Ram Singh and Nagesh Kumar — the two dissenting voices — cited the slowest growth in seven quarters in the three months to September, a 60 basis-point reduction in the FY growth projections, and low core inflation as factors having influenced their vote in favour of a quarter percentage point rate cut, showed the minutes.

BJP MPs Sarangi, Rajput, Konyak should be given all awards for acting: Jaya Bachchan
Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan on Friday alleged that the BJP MPs, undergoing treatment in a hospital in the city, are doing «drama» and said they should be given all the awards for their «acting performance». Speaking to reporters during a protest march carried out by opposition parties here, the Rajya Sabha member also claimed that she has never seen in her career as an actor a «better performer» than BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi, Mukesh Rajput and S Phangnon Konyak. The BJP hit back and said this is the «true culture» of the SP and the opposition INDIA bloc with Bachchan standing with the «aggressor», not with the victim, survivor and the tribal woman MP who has made «grave» allegations against Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The acrimonious face-off between the opposition and the ruling NDA over alleged insult to B R Ambedkar took an unprecedented ugly turn in Parliament premises on Thursday with claims of pushing and shoving involving MPs, leaving two BJP members Sarangi and Rajput hospitalised.
