Kochi: The Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has bagged a Rs 1,100 crore-worth international order for eight 6300 TDW dry cargo vessels. CSL said it has won an international order from Wilson ASA, Norway, for the design and construction of four 6,300 TDW dry cargo vessels. «An agreement has also been entered into for an additional four vessels of the same type, which will be formally contracted within September 19, 2024,» a CSL release said. CSL said the new order was a continuation of the contract awarded in June 2023 for the design and construction of six 3800 TDW dry cargo vessels, which are now at advanced levels of construction at the yard at Udupi in Karnataka.

Worldwide, 2603 students from 137 countries have been awarded scholarships this year for the Erasmus Mundus Joint master’s degree, which offers a study programme jointly delivered by an international consortium of higher education institutions. 2024 also marks the 20th anniversary of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s program, a milestone that underscores the program's positive impact on students, higher education institutions, and countries beyond the EU. India has been the largest beneficiary of the programme, with over 2000 students receiving the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship since its inception in 2004. Overall, more than 6,000 Erasmus+ short and long-term scholarships have been awarded to Indian students since the program opened to international students in 2004, providing access to state-of-the-art education and research facilities, international exposure, and valuable professional networks and thus opened up wider professional opportunities. NEW DELHI : The nearly three-month-long election process slowed down the construction of highways in the first two months of fiscal year 2024-25 despite the Centre front-loading capital expenditure, showed data from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH). The highway construction fell by12% to 1,288 kilometres in April-May from 1,465km in the year-ago period, showed the data. Besides, the government awarded only one 4km road project during the two months, compared to road projects of 382 km a year ago “due to the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct", the road ministry said in an office memorandum on Friday.

special TADA court here on Tuesday rejected gangster Abu Salem's plea opposing his planned transfer from the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai. Salem is undergoing life sentence at the Taloja prison in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The decision to shift him was a «conspiracy to kill him» as he was likely to be released in a few months, Salem's application claimed. The current prison was safe for him and he could be attacked by members of the rival gangs in other jails in Maharashtra, it said. The jail administration told the court it wanted to relocate Salem as his current cell needed reconstruction, and there was no other safe cell for him in Taloja. Special judge for cases under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act B D Shelke, after hearing both the sides, rejected Salem's plea. The court, however, asked the inspector general (prisons), Pune, to issue appropriate directions to the Taloja jail superintendent to ensure the gangster's safety while shifting him to the central prison in Nashik, as planned. A direction should also be issued to the Nashik prison to ensure the safety and security of the convict, the judge said.

NDA government in Bihar has cancelled 350 contracts worth Rs 826 crore, which were awarded during the previous RJD-led 'Mahagathbandhan' dispensation in the state for supplying drinking water in rural areas, a minister said on Tuesday. The decision to cancel the contracts was taken after an inquiry by the Public Health Engineering Department revealed that there were "irregularities in the process of selecting contractors", he said. «During the previous RJD-led grand alliance regime in the state, many contracts were awarded by the department. An inquiry by the department revealed that due process was not followed in awarding 350 contracts worth Rs 826 crore. These were related to the rural water supply, including the installation of hand pumps and mini water supply systems,» PHED Minister Niraj Kumar Singh told PTI. The department has handed over the preliminary inquiry report to the competent authority in the state government for a thorough probe, he said.
