European shares edge higher at start of holiday-thinned week
European shares were marginally higher on Wednesday as robust China data lifted miners, while an overnight Wall Street rally amid persisting optimism the Federal Reserve could begin cutting rates as early as next March helped tech stocks rise. By 0814 GMT, the pan European STOXX 600 rose 0.1% at 477.83 points following an over 0.4% gain across major Wall Street indexes overnight. Basic resources was amongst the top gainers, rising 0.4% as most base metal and iron ore prices advanced after data showed manufacturing activity in top consumer China improved last month, while energy advanced 0.6%. The technology sector, which houses Europe's major chipmakers, jumped 0.7%, in line with their rising Wall Street counterparts. Keeping a lid on gains, telecoms and insurers fell 0.4% each. Volumes are expected to be light as traders return from an extended Christmas break with only a few trading days left in 2023. Bayer rose 1.7% after the German drugs-to-pesticides group said it has won a trial in a lawsuit brought by a California man who said he developed cancer from exposure to its Roundup weedkiller.

Harry Kane smashes Bundesliga record with Bayern Munich's dominant win
Harry Kane made history during Bayern Munich’s triumphant 3-0 victory against Stuttgart on Sunday. The 30-year-old football sensation showcased his prowess by netting two goals, catapulting him into a new record as the fastest player to reach 20 Bundesliga goals. Kane's feat in just 14 games remarkably surpassed Uwe Seeler’s previous record by a staggering seven matches. Even Erling Haaland, the standout from Manchester City's ranks during his Borussia Dortmund stint, took 22 games to achieve the same milestone. Despite his incredible personal achievement, Kane humbly redirected the spotlight, praising the team's collective effort. «That was probably the best performance of the season,» he remarked about Bayern's exceptional win. Emphasizing the importance of the entire squad, he acknowledged, «We need the entire squad. Overall it was a very good performance today. We can be proud of that.»

Rate Cut
Are the next 6 months good for a pre-election, pre-rate cut rally? Abhay Agarwal answers
Abhay Agarwal, Founder & Fund Manager, Piper Serica, says “we are seeing a lot of investors both in India and internationally under allocated on the risk assets, They are actually “desperately” looking to put on positions, get to a fair level of allocations. That is why we are seeing in the markets that anybody who did the hard work, stayed invested, used the downturn in the market to deploy capital, is finally getting rewarded. So it is a great reminder from the markets for all investors.” What a week has it been for a very long time. We have been spoiled by such massive gains in such a short period of time. This kind of a market makes all of us feel that we are great stock pickers and great participants in the market, does it not? We have been investing for 30 years and I am again reminded that long-term investors should learn to ignore the general market perspectives and market wisdom because not much ago, there was a lot of caution, lot of worry about the markets Michael Burry was putting on a big short and people said look, he is a very smart guy who made billions shorting the market. Crude prices had gone up and there was a worry that the Fed will increase rates and a lot of investors got under allocated to the markets at that point of time.

Bayer CEO Says Breakup Wouldn’t Fix All of the Company’s Ills
BERLIN—Bayer Chief Executive Bill Anderson said the company would bounce back quickly from a recent spate of bad news, and warned that a breakup of the pharmaceutical and agricultural company was no universal cure for its ailments. A stream of negative news has rekindled calls from investors for Bayer to unlock value by spinning off its units into separate businesses. But in an interview with The Wall Street Journal this week, Anderson said the company couldn’t be distracted from the tough restructuring to fix the businesses.
