Ruling party has weaponsied suspension of MPs: Kharge tells Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar
Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said in a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. In his reply to a letter written by Dhankhar, Kharge said the Chairman's letter «unfortunately justifies the autocratic and arrogant attitude of the Government towards Parliament.» Replying to the points raised by Dhankhar, the senior Congress leader urged him to examine his concerns «objectively and with neutrality as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.» «The ruling party has indeed weaponised the suspension of members as a convenient tool to undermine democracy, sabotage Parliamentary practices and throttle the Constitution.

Supreme Court's 2023 Rundown: Backing Modi's moves on Article 370, cash ban and drawing the line too
Supreme Court delivered a melange of seminal verdicts in 2023 including those that upheld the Centre's decisions to scrap Article 370, which bestowed special status on Jammu and Kashmir, demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes, and refused to accord legal recognition to same-sex marriages. Under Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, the top court created a record by disposing of an unprecedented 52,191 cases between January 1 and December 15, 2023. It had disposed of nearly 40,000 cases the previous year. Though the Modi government received an emphatic endorsement from the Supreme Court for its decisions nullifying Article 370 and binning Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes, it was at the receiving end of apex court order that held the Delhi government had legislative and executive control over services in the national capital except for public order, police and land. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court (SC) unanimously ruled that the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners shall be made by the President on the advice of a committee consisting of the prime minister, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India. However, these led to the framing of a new law on the appointment of CEC and ECs and amendments to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) Act by the Centre.

Capital formation, manufacturing & payments to benefit from past reforms: Santosh Kumar Singh
Santosh Kumar Singh, Fund Manager, Motilal Oswal AMC, says “I still find IT very attractive, I am very bullish on capital markets and I think that the biggest financialisation is going to get played through the capital markets. Also, health has been a place where the market has been very, very bearish for multiple reasons. I think it is a space which has got very high longevity. And at the same time, this is a space where the competitive edges of the company can stay for a very long period of time. So yes, those are the two spaces I am really liking.” Talk to us about the valuation of the market. What went through your mind when you were looking at the screen the day before yesterday? All of us thought that the much-awaited correction, cleansing of froth would happen. But we barely corrected for a day and everything came back? Santosh Kumar Singh: Yes, so see if I am looking at the market, it seems the valuation is inching closer to one standard deviation on the Nifty side, right. And that is where my view is. Above that, I do not see a re-rating. Above that, a lot of froth starts to pick in so I am not expecting it to go above that. That is where the EPS growth of the market comes into play. The EPS growth seems to be doing okay, around 13-14% EPS growth for the next couple of years. So the market may give that sort of return.

Selecting poll officials: Contestants won't stop levelling allegations
Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (appointment, conditions of service and term of office) Bill, 2023, passed by Parliament fills a gap that parties, jurists, and activists often mentioned. It sets out a selection committee consisting of the prime minister, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and a cabinet minister to recommend the names of CEC and ECs for appointment by the President. A designated search committee, headed by the Union law minister, will prepare a panel for consideration by the selection committee.
