While writing a letter to a friend from college, the late David Foster Wallace came up with the line “Every love story is a ghost story", which later became the name of DT Max’s biography of Wallace. I was reminded of this line and its semantic genius (both love and ghosts are the sworn enemies of reason) more than once as I read Akhil Katyal’s recently released collection of poems, The Last Time I Saw You.

‘Deviants’ book review: How generations of men navigated being queer in India
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Towards the end of Santanu Bhattacharya’s novel Deviants, Vivaan, who is one of the three protagonists, has a heart-to-heart with his beloved uncle, his “Mambro", a clever pun he had conjured up as an eight-year-old to refer to his mother’s brother. Like Vivaan, Mambro is gay, as was Mambro’s uncle Sukumar—Vivaan’s Grand-Mamu—in another era.

The artist has created an immersive experience by projecting a single-channel video onto an earlier oil painting, titled Man Threading Needle, which showed a middle-aged man completely focused on the needle in his hand.Even though the image of the man remains fixed, you feel like the visual has transformed and evolved as the videoscapes projected on it change.

CJI DY Chandrachud's legacy: His powerful statements during same-sex marriage judgment echoed with the queer community
Chandrachud retires on November 10, he will leave with one of the most significant legacies in the history of the Supreme Court. There has never been a CJI as prolific as Chandrachud in terms of judicial output. He has written 92 judgments as CJI, more than his last 4 predecessors put together. To put things in perspective, the last CJI who served a similar 2-year term, SH Kapadia authored 27 judgments, less than a third of Chandrachud. “This is a testament to how incredibly hard-working Chandrachud has been as CJI,” wrote Anrghya Sengupta Research Director, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, for TOI. The 50th CJI played a pivotal role in several crucial cases, including the decision where a 5-judge bench headed by him unanimously ruled against legalising same-sex marriage in India.

MHA tells states to ensure LGBTQ+ prisoners rights in jails
queer community lodged in jails can meet a person of their choice without any discrimination or judgement as part of their prison visitation rights. In a communication to all state governments, the Union home ministry said it has been the constant endeavour of the Centre to reach out to all states and Union territories and share the contemporary guidelines and best practices on varied aspects of efficient prison administration and management. The ministry said it has come to its notice that members of the queer community (LGBTQ+) are often discriminated against because of their gender identity or sexual orientation and often face violence and disrespect. With the objective of ensuring that there is no discrimination in access to goods and services to the queer community, which are available to the public at large, especially with reference to prison visitation rights, the home ministry has prepared 'Model Prison Manual, 2016' and the 'Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act 2023' and these should be followed by all state governments and Union territories, it said.

Sell sell? Why the market doesn’t like the poll results
Mint explains why. The Indian stock markets was counting on a 350-plus seat victory for the BJP and 400 for the NDA. But, unlike in the earlier two Lok Sabha polls, the BJP failed to get even a simple majority of 272 seats, and the NDA won only 291 seats.

Slender win for NDA queers pitch for street, investors lose ₹31 trillion
₹31 trillion on Tuesday, as the national vote count belied predictions of punters, pollsters and politicians. The Nifty and Sensex plunged the most in four years as it became clear that the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will fall short of the 272 seats required to form a government on its own. While the BJP-led NDA secured a comfortable majority, the numbers were far below Modi's call for 400 seats, and exit poll predictions of above 350.

Poll finds declining Canadian support for LGBTQ2 rights and visibility
LGBTQ2 rights in Canada. The Ipsos survey polled adults in 26 countries on a variety of metrics measuring support for the queer community.Canada, it found, was among the few countries where support for rights and visibility appeared to register “precipitous drops,” Ipsos vice-president of public affairs Sanyam Sethi said.“What really stood out to me was how starkly Canadians are changing their opinions,” she said.“On some of these support aspects the drops in Canada are the highest across all 26 countries we have trend data for.”One area where attitudes appeared to have shifted was support for LGBTQ2 visibility. While 49 per cent of respondents agreed with people being open about their sexual orientation or gender identity, that still put Canada in the bottom 10 of countries measured. What’s more, the number was down by 12 per cent from 2021.Similarly, the poll found support for LGBTQ2 people showing affection in public (kissing or holding hands) at 40 per cent, down eight points from 2021.Just one-third of respondents supported more LGBTQ2 characters on screen, down 10 per cent from 2021.Annie Ohana, a B.C. teacher who also serves on the board of Surrey Pride said the numbers were troubling.“You can exist, but don’t exist in front of me,” she said.Ohana said she believed the data reflected an aggressive campaign targeting the LGBTQ2 community that has manifested in protests against SOGI-123 in schools, drag events and supports for transgender people.“You see the language of ‘groomer’ and ‘pedophile’ out there, being put on everybody,” Ohana said.
