Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Uttarakhand from January 2025. According to a press statement issued on Wednesday, all preparations have been completed, and Uttarakhand will become the first state to implement the UCC after independence. During a meeting of the Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board (UIIDB) held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Chief Minister Dhami stated that the state government has undertaken all necessary preparations to implement the UCC, fulfilling its earlier resolution. The Chief Minister recalled that in the first cabinet meeting of the newly-formed government in March 2022, a decision was made to constitute an expert committee to study and implement the UCC in the state. Following this, a five-member expert committee was formed under the chairmanship of retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. Based on the committee's recommendations, the Uniform Civil Code Bill 2024 was passed by the State Legislative Assembly on February 7, 2024.

NEW DELHI : The Election Commission of India (ECI) will likely retain discretionary powers to defer legislative assembly polls under specific circumstances even after the country transitions to a ‘one nation, one election’ system, per the Constitutional amendment bill tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Currently, the ECI can conduct elections under Article 324 of the Constitution and seek an extension to complete elections through section 153 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Opposition parties dubbed the draft laws — a Constitution amendment bill and an ordinary bill — as an attack on the federal structure, a charge rejected by the government. The bills were introduced after the opposition sought a division of votes. After electronic voting and a subsequent count by paper slips, the bills were introduced with 269 members in favour and 198 against.

Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a bill to strengthen the efficient working of the national and state disaster management authorities with the government emphasising that the legislation will help states in handling all disasters in a better way. The House cleared the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to amend the Disaster Management Act by a voice vote. Several amendments moved by opposition members were negated by the House. The government said states faced difficulties in implementing the Disaster Management Act of 2005. The proposed amendment is based on overcoming the difficulties flagged by states.
