However, true to its authoritarian tendencies, the BJP-led central government is trying to impose this undemocratic proposal on the country.» The Kerala government, Siddaramaiah said, has already passed a resolution opposing the ONOE proposal and has communicated its dissent to the Centre. «If needed, our government will also consult the Congress High Command and adopt a similar resolution to send a strong message against this anti-democratic move.»

«The Union Cabinet has cleared the Bill on One Nation One Election. The views of the Indian National Congress on this subject had been forcefully articulated by its President Mallikarjun Kharge ji on January 17, 2024. Nothing has happened since then to modify them,» said Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh. Kharge, in a letter to the secretary of the high-level committee on 'one nation, one election' on January 17, 2024, had said, «The Indian National Congress is strongly opposed to the very idea of 'One Nation, One Election'.»

Lok Sabha passed the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024 by a voice vote Wednesday. The bill seeks to repeal the Indian Railway Board Act, 1905 by incorporating the provisions for constitution and composition of the Railway Board into the Railways Act, 1989. Speaking during the debate on the proposed legislation, union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the bill will simplify the legal structure for operations of the Indian Railways. He also allayed concerns of privatisation and over centralisation of the Indian Railways raised by some members. Vaishnaw said there was no question of privatising the Indian Railways, adding that the infrastructure being developed was for the nation. He also said supremacy of parliament was not being affected by this legislation.

West Bengal government on Tuesday passed two bills for formation of two private universities in the state during the penultimate day of the winter session of the Assembly. The two bills, passed in the assembly, will help in setting up of two private universities-Rabindranath Tagore University in Nadia district’s Dhaniakhali and Ramakrishna Paramhansa University at North 24 Parganas district’s Agarpara. State Minister for Higher Education & School Department Bratya Basu said in his speech on the floor of the House, “In Bengal there are 15 private universities altogether, including these two new universities, along with government universities.”
