Resolution urging withdrawal of Waqf (Amendment) Bill passed in West Bengal assembly
West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday, even as BJP legislators staged a walkout opposing it. The resolution, moved by Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, claimed that the bill, if passed, will affect the Waqf administration in the country and as such, extreme caution and due diligence are needed before any such drastic change is affected in the existing law. BJP members staged a walkout from the House during discussion on the resolution. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the resolution was a waste of precious time of the House as a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been formed to examine the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, and that its term was recently extended till the last day of the budget session of Parliament in 2025.

Normalcy returns to Rajya Sabha as opposition chooses debate over disruption
Rajya Sabha returned to regular work with the opposition abandoning its plan of disrupting proceedings to press for its demands and taking on the government through debates on burning issues. The upper house saw the smooth conduct of zero hour, question hour and passage of two bills on Tuesday. When the house assembled for the day, chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced that he has received a “record” number of 42 notices for suspension of listed business to discuss an important issue under Rule 267. He said that eight subjects have been mentioned in these notices, namely, the law and order situation in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh; the law and order situation in Manipur; special category status to Odisha; the damage caused by Fengal cyclone in Tamil Nadu; the Adani bribery issue; the law and order situation in Delhi; the displacement of people in Wayanad due to landslide; and the attack on minorities in Bangladesh. Dhankhar dismissed the notices and proceeded with the zero hour with the opposition conceding after a feeble protest. The smooth functioning of the House facilitated the raising of different issues by the opposition, which is reportedly divided on what matter should be given precedence during protests.

Lok Sabha passes Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024
Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was passed on Tuesday in the Lok Sabha during the winter session of Parliament, proposing significant changes to banking regulations. «Banks are being professionally run today. The metrics are healthy so they can go to the market and raise bonds, raise loans & run their business accordingly,» said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her address at the Lower House of the Parliament. Among its key provisions, the Bill allows depositors to nominate up to four individuals for their bank accounts or fixed deposits, replacing the current single-nominee system. The move aims to simplify fund distribution after the death of an account holder, a problem which arose during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adani row: Samyukt Kisan Morcha threatens protest in support of opposition's demand for JPC probe
Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday attacked the Centre over the Adani issue and threatened to launch a protest in support of the opposition's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations against the business group. In a statement, the SKM, an umbrella organisation of several farmers' bodies, also said that protests will be held in Uttar Pradesh on December 4 against proposed privatisation of electricity sector in the state. The SKM accused the NDA government at the Centre of shielding industrialist Gautam Adani, against whom bribery allegations have been made in a US court. «The case registered against Adani Group in the USA corroborates SKM's demand of no privatisation of the electricity sector and prepaid smart meters that will impose huge exploitation of the people,» the SKM said.
