Less than 17 lakh Delhiites zero bill power consumers, 70 pc paying tariffs up to Rs 2000: sources
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) asserted that its government in Delhi is the first in the country to provide free 200 units of electricity per month and fifty per cent subsidy on monthly consumption of 400 units. The AAP, in a statement, alleged that the BJP wanted to stall the Delhi government's free electricity scheme by pressurising officers. A Delhi BJP spokesperson, on the other hand, accused the AAP of trying to «mislead » Delhiites on the power subsidy scheme and the issue of rising electricity bills.

HDFC Bank continues aggressive deposit accretion, adds Rs 1.2 lakh crore in September quarter
HDFC Bank continued its drive to aggressively grow its deposit base by adding more than Rs 1.2 lakh crore worth of deposits in the September quarter provisional numbers showed. The lender grew its deposit by 15.1% at the end of the September quarter taking its total deposit base to Rs 25 lakh crore. Sequentially deposits grew by 5%. «Overall, we see this as a good set of numbers and if the margin is stable despite the slower loan growth, it would provide greater confidence on a quicker normalization story,» said Pranav Gundlapalle, head, India financials at Bernstein. «We could even see a continuation of the healthy margin improvement story if there had been a substantial decline in borrowings during the quarter.»

SYDNEY : Google threatened to stop linking to news in New Zealand if lawmakers pass a bill aimed at making digital platforms pay media outlets, setting up another fight over whether tech companies unfairly benefit from news content. New Zealand is seeking to become the latest country to pass a law that would compel digital platforms like Alphabet’s Google and Meta’s Facebook to pay for news articles, at a time when traditional media outlets have been struggling as readers shift to online platforms.

Biden exempts some semiconductor factories from environmental reviews
Joe Biden on Wednesday signed legislation that will exempt some U.S. semiconductor manufacturing facilities from federal environmental reviews that are receiving government subsidies. Without the new law, projects from the $52.7 billion CHIPS Act of 2022 could have been forced to undergo additional federal environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 to win federal permits. Proponents say those projects had already complied with federal, state and local environmental regulations and permitting requirements and that without the change they could have potentially faced years of additional delays.

Delhi govt to audit DISCOMs on pension surcharge issue
Atishi has ordered a special audit of power companies to look into the pension surcharge issue, an official statement said on Wednesday. To be conducted by auditors approved by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), the move aims to ensure greater transparency in the pension process of the Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB), it said. The DISCOMs charge a pension surcharge of seven per cent from power consumers in their monthly bills. The surcharge is calculated as a percentage of the amount of fixed and energy cost portion of the bill. Emphasising the government's commitment towards the welfare of pensioners, Atishi stated that the well-being of DVB pensioners was a top priority. The audit is expected to bring accountability and clarity to the funding and distribution of pension benefits, ensuring that pensioners receive the support they deserve.
