species diversity. It has long been speculated that islands support exceptionally high amounts of global biodiversity, but the true extent has not been known until now. In world-first research published in Nature Today, my colleagues and I counted and mapped the diversity of plant life on Earth's islands. We found 21 per cent of the world's total plant species are endemic to islands, meaning they occur nowhere else on the planet. These findings are important. Island plants are at higher risk of extinction than those on mainland. Detailed knowledge of plants species, and where they grow, is essential for monitoring and conserving them.

global coffee prices are rising, India’s coffee industry has an opportunity to innovate and diversify its offerings, says Vinay Nair, General Manager, India & Emerging International, Costa Coffee. Despite the ongoing price fluctuations, the enthusiasm for coffee, especially among younger generations, ensures that demand remains robust, he says. In an interaction with ET Digital, Nair recognises the need to address climate change. He says the company is involved in sustainable farming practices and responsible sourcing, which helps it support biodiversity and enhance the livelihood of coffee-growing communities. Edited excerpts: The Economic Times (ET): With coffee prices going up globally, how do you think this will impact the coffee industry in India? Vinay Nair (VN): Rising global coffee prices present both challenges and opportunities for the industry. India's coffee industry is thriving and is highly respected worldwide, but we do not have control over global pricing dynamics. However, we have observed that despite the fluctuations, the growing enthusiasm for coffee, especially among younger generations, ensures that demand remains robust. At Costa Coffee, this shift provides an exciting opportunity for us to innovate and diversify our offerings. We are enhancing our partnerships with local farmers and focusing on cost-effective, environmentally friendly sourcing methods.

Notre Dame cathedral, will still be under renovation after a devastating fire that ignited in the cathedral and burned for 12 hours on April 14, 2019. When the last embers were extinguished, most of Notre Dame's wood and metal roof was destroyed, and its majestic spire had vanished, consumed by flames. Notre Dame is nearly 1,000 years old and has been damaged and repaired many times. Its last major renovation was in the mid-1800s. The massive beams that framed the structure were fashioned from European oak trees harvested 300 to 400 years ago. Today, these trees are common throughout north-central Europe, but few are tall enough to replace Notre Dame's roof lattice and spire, thanks to centuries of deforestation. Planners had to search nationwide for enough suitably large oaks for the restoration.
