Get lenders dressing up loans to cut exposure, AIFs tell RBI
alternative investment funds (AIFs) in India have put their cards on the table. A fund lobby has told RBI it would accept a directive that forces lenders which have used AIFs to 'evergreen' loans to slash exposure to 10% of a fund corpus within six months from the date of RBI's circular. It has also mooted a limit on investment by a non-banking finance company (NBFC) in an AIF.

Birthday or Sunday brunch: Celebrations are short-term goals for many; costs rising rapidly
Personal finance goals typically include three big-ticket items: education, wedding and retirement. Hiring at top companies remains on track in 2024
hiring in 2024. Top companies like L&T, Tata Steel, PepsiCo, Airtel, ITC, among others, told ET that their hiring plans are on track for the coming year mostly due to expansion of existing operations, bringing cheer to the otherwise muted job market. This is at a time when most players, especially the IT firms, are cutting down hiring numbers, especially at the entry level. Hiring for this bunch will largely be focused on women to improve gender diversity; sustainability; and entry level talent from the campuses apart from lateral hiring. Overall, the hiring momentum for 2024 will likely be the same as 2023 and in some cases, even more. Hiring momentum will continue in 2024 because of the growth and expansion plans at Tata Steel to reach 40 million tonnes capacity by 2030, said Atrayee Sanyal, VP, human resource manager, Tata Steel.

Retail versus FPIs, the tug-of-war building in derivatives
MUMBAI : A battle of nerves has built up in India’s derivatives market with foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) betting the indices will rise further, while an opposing camp of retail and wealthy investors is equally convinced they can correct. Even as markets have hit record highs, National Stock Exchange’s Client category—comprising largely high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and retail investors—has taken a sizeable bearish position on index futures contracts, mainly the Nifty and the Bank Nifty, while FPIs have a bullish position on them. NSE data showed that Client held 85,251 cumulative net short contracts as of 22 December, while FPIs held 84,690 net long contracts.

OMCs a short-term play; beware of froth in IPO market: Nitin Raheja
Nitin Raheja, ED, Julius Baer Wealth Advisors, says “OMCs are short-term tactical plays and that is how we look at them. If in the next couple of months, before the election code comes into play, crude remains benign, then they will be good, in fact, for a good part of the next year. But fundamentally, the fact that they do not really have complete freedom and there is interference from the government and the ministry, means they can’t be long-term strategic compounders.” This year has been marked by the comeback of the oil and gas PSUs. What is your take on this because there was always a regulatory overhang which challenged the institutional investors not to participate in these stocks in a big way. Do you think some of those worries are getting abated now? Nitin Raheja: I do not think so. I do not see anything which has significantly changed from a regulatory perspective. These are good short-term tactical plays. OMCs are benefitting from the fact that crude has remained relatively benign, so they have not faced those pressures. If in the next couple of months, before the election code comes into play, crude remains benign, then they will be good, in fact, for a good part of the next year. But fundamentally, the fact that they do not really have complete freedom and there is interference from time to time from the government and the ministry do not make them long-term strategic compounders. They are good short-term plays that is how we look at it.
