To study or to work: A common dilemma of early career professionals
Early career professionals often have a confusion: should they go down the path of a job or go in for specialised higher education. After graduation, some individuals immediately enter the job market and experience real-life work situations, whereas others apply for a higher degree to enhance their knowledge in a specific field. Some work for one or two years after graduation to first assess the industry dynamics and then get back to school to master an area of expertise. Which is the right path for you — diving straight into the job sector, pursuing higher education first or working for a while before going in for higher studies? Gaurav Yadav, Deputy Director (Admissions), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Bengaluru Campus, says early career professionals have to make these choices, and graduate students have to decide if they should go for campus placements or apply for off-campus jobs, instead of pursuing higher studies. Graduates must acquire hands-on experience to reexamine their interests and ardour in their chosen careers, he says. Elaborating on students’ preferences at MAHE, Yadav says a substantial share of candidates actively engages in placements and off-campus job applications. On the other hand, those focused on research and academic advances prefer to continue their education through higher studies.

US-Iran agree for prisoner exchange deal; Know the Americans who will be freed?
Joe Biden’s administration has moved to free five American citizens who were detained in Iran by issuing a waiver for the international banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian money, from South Korea to Qatar without the fear of American sanctions. Moreover, as part of the Iran-US prisoner exchange deal, the Biden administration has agreed to release five Iranian citizens who were held in the US. According to The Associated Press, the US Secretary of State Antony Blnken signed off on the sanctions waivers late last week after US and Iranian officials said that the agreement was in place in principle.

UK's arrest of suspected spy fuels calls for tougher stance on China
China's foreign influence operations, it would represent a sensational case of infiltration. A 28-year-old British man who worked as a researcher deep inside Britain's Parliament was arrested in March on suspicion of working for the Chinese government. The man, who denies being a spy, worked with prominent lawmakers on China policy, raising fears of possible security breaches and widening a rift within the governing Conservative Party over how London should engage with an increasingly assertive Beijing. «The Chinese are infiltrating across the board; they go for anything and everything,» said Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute in London.

The Rs 100-trillion MF opportunity
It all started about six decades ago when the Unit Trust of India launched the Unit Scheme-1964 scheme or US 64 as it was popularly known. UTI held sway over the mutual funds market for nearly 25 years thereafter before the space was thrown open to other state-owned players. But even after the private sector was allowed entry it took until May, 2014 for the average assets under management (AAUM) to hit the Rs 10-trillion mark. That had probably less to do with the chequered career of US 64 than the low levels of awareness of the stock market. However, over the last decade the value of assets has soared, crossing Rs 46 trillion in July; in the last three years, the industry clocked in a compounded annual growth rate of nearly 20%. Now, given how fast folios are being added and how the stock market is booming, the Rs 50 trillion mark seems just round the corner.

Scotland is the latest country to begin trials for a four-day workweek
Scotland is set to introduce pilot schemes that will let select civil servants to transition to a four-day workweek. The pilot programs are slated for various government departments and agencies and are aimed at exploring the feasibility and benefits of a reduced workweek. This initiative, outlined in the 2023-24 Programme for Government (PfG), details the government's plans for the upcoming year and aims to evaluate the potential benefits of reduced working hours. The pilot program's main objective, as stated in the document, is to assess the well-being, environmental impact, and productivity gains that could be achieved through the adoption of a four-day workweek in the public sector. The pilot is expected to run for approximately one year and may involve arm's-length bodies rather than ministerial departments. Certain government enterprise agencies, responsible for fostering economic development in Scottish regions, have expressed interest in participating in the trial. The United Kingdom conducted its largest-ever trial of the four-day workweek just last year. Nearly 3,000 employees across 61 organizations embraced a shorter workweek for six months. The majority of employers opted to retain the four-day workweek model when the experiment concluded. They attributed this decision to increased revenues, reduced staff turnover, and mitigated worker burnout as the key drivers of their choice.

From GRE to graduate school: Understanding the test and how it will change
study abroad continues to be an exciting choice for students eager to broaden their horizons and enhance their career prospects. Yet, for lack of information or proper guidance, many of these students remain unaware of the expansive opportunities that preparation for a single examination can unveil – the GRE General Trest can indeed open doors to overseas education spanning numerous disciplines. The GRE test is a comprehensive and multi-faceted examination that not only caters to students pursuing law, courses in STEM and other professional courses, but also courses in business and management. Starting September 22, 2023, the GRE test will undergo several modifications. Among other changes, the test will notably see a reduction in the exam duration, making it a test of less than 2 hours total. This change makes the GRE the shortest exam for graduate, business, and law school admissions. Additionally, the official results of the GRE test will be available to test takers even faster than before, just 8-10 days post-examination. Each section of the modernized GRE test has also undergone change. The number of questions in the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections have been reduced from 40 to 27 and the unscored sections of the test will also be phased out as of September 22. Further, the «Analyse an Argument» task in the Analytical Writing section has been eliminated and from now on the test will contain only one Analytical Writing essay, “Analyse an Issue.”

Beyond degrees, experience: Employers are looking for people with these skills
Alok Kumar, Senior Director of Manpower, a subsidiary of ManpowerGroup, says, “In a fast-paced, dynamic world of work, competencies required for the job mapped against the skill set possessed by the manager will help accelerate growth. But at the same time, when it comes to team management and decision making, which managers are required to do, experience plays a crucial role.” A clear focus on leadership development and succession planning by organisations is key to not losing out on the best of both worlds.
