India's budget will need to be extra mindful of bond market hawks now
Things seem to be falling comfortably into place for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Yes, he lost seats in India’s recent general election—but he was, nevertheless, re-elected for a third term. Yes, he is dependent upon allied parties for the first time in his political career.

With AI, jets and police squadrons, Paris is securing the Olympics - and worrying critics
Paris Olympics boldly declared that France's capital would be " the safest place in the world " when the Games open this Friday. Tony Estanguet's confident forecast looks less far-fetched now with squadrons of police patrolling Paris' streets, fighter jets and soldiers primed to scramble, and imposing metal-fence security barriers erected like an iron curtain on both sides of the River Seine that will star in the opening show. France's vast police and military operation is in large part because the July 26-Aug. 11 Games face unprecedented security challenges. The city has repeatedly suffered deadly extremist attacks and international tensions are high because of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Rather than build an Olympic park with venues grouped together outside of the city center, like Rio de Janeiro in 2016 or London in 2012, Paris has chosen to host many of the events in the heart of the bustling capital of 2 million inhabitants, with others dotted around suburbs that house millions more. Putting temporary sports arenas in public spaces and the unprecedented choice to stage a river-borne opening ceremony stretching for kilometers (miles) along the Seine, makes safeguarding them more complex.

‘Chabutaras’: A symbol of Ahmedabad's ancient birdfeeding tradition
Chabutaras are 11-22ft tall structures made of wood, stone or concrete, designed specifically for birds. These traditional bird-feeders, though slightly outlandish looking, are an intrinsic part of the city’s visual and cultural lexicon. Ahmedabad is a city with an admirable population of sparrows, mynas, pigeons, old world babblers and purple sunbirds.

Ujjain shop owners told to display names, contact numbers: not targeting Muslims, says mayor
BJP government in UP for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route. Violators will have to pay a Rs 2,000 fine for the first offence and Rs 5,000 if they defy this order for the second time, Ujjain Mayor Mukesh Tatwal said on Saturday. This order is aimed at ensuring safety and transparency and not intended to target Muslim shop-keepers, the mayor said. Ujjain, the hometown of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is known for its sacred Mahakal temple, attracting devotees from around the globe, especially during the Savaan month, which starts on Monday. Tatwal said the Mayor-in-Council of Ujjain had approved a proposal for shopkeepers to display their names on September 26, 2002, followed by the Corporation House, and subsequently sent it to the state government for objections and formalities. «All formalities have been already completed. The implementation was delayed as the nameplates were initially required to be of the same size and colour. Now, we have relaxed these terms. Displaying the names and mobile numbers of shopkeepers will suffice,» he told PTI over the phone.

Competitive capital-ism: Andhra Pradesh revives Amaravati, Chhattisgarh seeks special grant for Nava Raipur Atal Nagar expansion
Andhra Pradesh demands Rs 15,000 crore for its new capital Amaravati, can’t Chhattisgarh make a similar pitch? The Chhattisgarh government has appealed to the 16th Finance Commission for a special grant of Rs 4,131 crore to bolster its new capital, Nava Raipur Atal Nagar. When FC chairman Arvind Panagariya and his team visited Raipur earlier this month, the state presented a 10-point proposal encompassing infrastructure development such as new roads, cycle tracks, indoor stadium and a substantial IT building spanning 100,000 sq m. “If the Government of India gives a special financial grant for Amaravati in the forthcoming budget, we should also receive the same,” says Chhattisgarh Finance Minister OP Choudhary, while speaking to ET over the phone. “Nava Raipur, in fact, deserves more, as Chhattisgarh has already invested Rs 8,000 crore from the state coffer.” He adds that the state is exploring various financial instruments to raise funds, including a `1,000 crore Nava Raipur bond, and leveraging a 6,000 acre land bank to attract private sector investment. Nava Raipur Atal Nagar—previously known as Naya Raipur (“Nava” means new in the Chhattisgarhi dialect)—is set to expand from its initial expanse of 80 sq km to 237 sq km. The new city is located 20 km southeast of Raipur. Of late, state officials have been courting private investors across sectors such as IT (with plug-and-play facilities), pharmaceuticals, electronics, logistics and defence.

Quick fashion on quick commerce? Instamart, Blinkit in talks with top apparel brands
Quick commerce platforms like Zomato’s Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart are in advanced talks with leading apparel and shoe manufacturers like Arvind Fashions, Fabindia, Woodland and Puma to sell their products to capitalise on a large section of consumers in top 15 cities moving to buy products other than groceries through quick commerce, multiple industry executives said. Fabindia has already finalised terms with Instamart whereby a tenth of the unsold stock will be taken back by the apparel manufacturer, and there will be a no-return policy for consumers. Others like Woodland are negotiating for store-return. Quick commerce firms currently do not have any return policy for products sold through their platform. These startups are hoping to exploit the growing fashion business, which is currently the second-largest selling category in India's e-commerce industry after electronics and smartphones, accounting for around 20-25% of sales. Quick commerce companies are also foraying into electronics and smartphones as ET recently reported.
