Maldives to hold road shows in India to woo tourists back
tourists back to the Maldives, a major tourism body here has announced that it will hold road shows across key Indian cities. A full-blown backlash was directed at the Maldives following derogatory remarks against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media by three Maldivian officials after Modi posted photos and video of the pristine Lakshadweep Islands on India's west coast on January 6 on his X handle. Scores of Indians, including multiple celebrities, cancelled their reservations and dropped plans to visit Maldives. The tourism arrival statistics reflected how from being a top visitor country, India's position went down to first fifth and now at the sixth position after January.

Russia switches tactics with attacks on Ukrainian power plants
Russia launched a major missile-and-drone assault on Ukrainian power stations, part of a new campaign to exploit delays in Western aid for Kyiv to press Moscow’s growing advantage in the third year of war. The overnight strikes hit several regions across the country, destroying a power plant in the Kyiv region and inflicting fresh damage on others that had been struck in earlier attacks. Tens of thousands of homes were left without power, according to Ukrainian officials.

State of emergency ‘had downward impact’ on eclipse attendance in Niagara Falls: mayor
regional government is facing a legal challenge over use of the declaration following a filing from the Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF) seeking a judicial review.“The CCF is deeply concerned about the proliferation of declarations of emergency in situations where no genuine emergencies exist,” the group said in a statement issued April 5.Niagara Region CAO Ron Tripp says use of the edict freed up much-needed “resources on the ground” and allowed for the streamlining and coordination of first responders.“Certainly it was much more intense as we approached the event, requesting enhanced support,” Tripp explained.”The declaration formalized the importance, the urgency and the degree of preparedness that was required.”He used Bell and Rogers deployment of additional resources, like mobile towers to supplement phone quality, as an example of what the declaration brings to keep 911 emergency services robust with so many in such finite spaces across the city.“So I don’t believe we would have seen that degree of deployment from the telecom entities without the state of emergency,” Tripp suggested. Both telecoms say they handled around six times the amount of traffic they normally do on a Monday in the Falls.Demand for hotel rooms in the city began to peak in mid-March as dwindling availability equated to prices as high as $1,000 a night for higher-end rooms. But Diodati said partners reported cancellations in early April right after the declaration.Venues like the Hilton Niagara Falls, Embassy Suites and Holiday Inn by the Falls had room packages available heading into the weekend before the event.“It was the Thursday before the Easter long weekend, so there was no chance to respond,” he said.

TPG Growth circles VLCC as Carlyle looks to sell minority stake in wellness company
Carlyle is in formal discussions with TPG Growth to sell at least 25-30% stake in VLCC Healthcare Ltd, within a year of acquiring the wellness, beauty products and services company, said people aware of the matter. VLCC’s nearly 78% surge in valuation in just 12 months is the key trigger for Carlyle to take some money off the table, the people said. Last January, Carlyle paid Rs 2,700 crore to buy a controlling 66% stake in the three-decade-old homegrown brand that gave the buyout fund an entry into a rapidly growing market for wellness products but one that is facing disruption from younger, nimbler, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands.

Natural gas should come under GST regime, says GAIL chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta
natural gas in the energy mix to 15% by 2030, said GAIL chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta. In an interview to ET's Sanjeev Choudhary, the former finance chief of Indian Oil Corporation, who took over as the chief of India's largest gas marketer and transporter in 2022, said the government should mandate the use of natural gas in refineries and steel making, and make emissions a factor in the merit order for electricity despatch to help gas-based power compete with coal-based supply. He also said natural gas should come under the goods and services tax (GST) regime, production-linked incentive (PLI) should be extended to LNG-powered vehicles and GST on CNG-powered vehicles should be slashed to 5% from 28%, on a par with electric vehicles (EVs). Edited excerpts: How does the global gas market look? The global gas market is well supplied and there is no concern about LNG prices. The OPEC+'s arbitrary production cuts, however, have an impact on LNG prices that are linked to crude oil. The situation can correct if the producer group reviewed its decision and took responsible action.

High-stake battle in Coimbatore - 'Manchester of South India'
Coimbatore, where BJP has fielded its Tamil Nadu chief, DMK has taken the seat back from ally CPIM to put its own candidate and AIADMK has its IT wing head in the fray. CPIM's PR Natarajan, backed by DMK, had won the Lok Sabha seat in 2019 with a vote share of 45.66%, with BJP's CP Radhakrishnan coming in second, getting 31.34% of the votes polled. In this election, DMK has fielded Ganapathy P Rajkumar, a former Coimbatore mayor who joined the party in 2020 after leaving AIADMK, going against its decade-long seat-sharing agreement with CPM for the seat, possibly anticipating a tough fight owing to BJP candidate Annamalai's growing popularity. AIADMK candidate is Singai Ramachandran. Annamalai is predicting BJP to win the seat with 60% votes. Coimbatore, comprising the assembly segments of Coimbatore South, Coimbatore North, Kavundampalayam, Singanallur, Sulur and Palladam, is one of the constituencies in the South where BJP is putting a lot of focus, making its rival parties also to be on high alert. The constituency has seen repeated visits by high-profile leaders to back their candidates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Coimbatore again on Wednesday. TN chief minister MK Stalin and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will hold a joint rally of the INDIA bloc in the city on Friday in support of Rajkumar.
