At UN summit, India calls for global shift to sustainable living
climate change and global success is more likely if affordable solutions are offered, India has said at the United Nations «Summit of the Future». Addressing the summit in New York on Friday, Leela Nandan, secretary in the Union environment ministry, also said that climate change discussions often focus solely on emission reductions, but «we are more likely to succeed if we offer affordable solutions, not simply impose decisions». The Summit of the Future brings together world leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss global challenges and strengthen multilateral cooperation to tackle emerging threats. Citing an estimate by the International Energy Agency, Nandan said, «If we were to put our actions into the right context in terms of saving energy, saving water, reducing waste, reducing e-waste, adopting sustainable food systems, we would have reduced annual global emissions by 2 billion tons by 2030.»

Maharashtra assembly polls fire up kitchen staple prices
cooking oil have turned pricier in the run-up to the Maharashtra assembly election, following the government's interventions to ensure better returns to farmers in the state which is the country's largest producer of the kitchen staples, said industry executives. Cooking oil prices have increased 18-25% in the wake of the imposition of import duty last week, they said, and as prices of all oils, including soybean, have gone up, farmers in Maharashtra are expected to get higher prices for their crop. Similarly, onions have become about 12% costlier in a week following the government's move to free up exports, according to the executives. Sugar prices have increased about 5% over the past month, they said, as the government, instead of following the usual practice of releasing more sugar in the market during the festive season, slashed the sugar quota for September by 6% to assuage the politically strong cooperatives and sugarcane farmers of Maharashtra.

Problem of affluence: Low official survey response rate
government surveys has doubled over the last five years, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said Friday. Highlighting the lack of cooperation from high income households living in gated communities, it said that an ‘income category’-wise analysis of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) data showed that non-responsiveness in the ‘high income’ category of urban areas grew to 11% in HCES 2022–23 from 3.3% in 2011–12. The non-responsiveness among the high-income category in rural areas increased to 3.9% from 1.3% in the same time period. A rising non-response rate has the potential to reduce the sample size of the government’s surveys and impact the accuracy of the official estimates.

EV tariffs will damage Germany, China, says Chinese commerce minister
European Union's imposition of tariffs on electric vehicles (EV) will «seriously interfere» with trade and investment cooperation and hurt both China and Germany. In talks on Tuesday with German Vice Chancellor and Economic Minister Robert Habeck, Wang Wentao said he hoped to reach a solution in line with World Trade Organisation rules as soon as possible, and avoid the escalation of China-EU economic and trade frictions, according to a statement released by China's Ministry of Commerce early on Wednesday. The European Commission is on the verge of proposing final tariffs of up to 35.3% on EVs built in China, on top of the EU's standard 10% car import duty.
