NITI Aayog invites EoI for undertaking research on 'Cost of Doing Business in India'
NITI Aayog has invited expression of interest for undertaking research on 'Cost of Doing Business in India' (CoDB), as India faces strong competition from countries like Vietnam, China, and Indonesia, which offer lower operational costs in key sectors. In a notice, Niti Aayog said the cost of doing business is a pivotal factor influencing the competitiveness of an economy, encompassing the expenses businesses incur to establish, operate and expand. «For a rapidly growing economy like India understanding these costs is essential to fostering a conducive business environment and attracting investment. »Despite India's significant reforms to improve its business climate, it faces strong competition from countries like Vietnam, China, and Indonesia, which offer lower operational costs in key sectors," it said.

IISc-incubated startup develops eco-friendly cement, claims it saves construction cost
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has said it has developed an eco-friendly cement alternative using the Geopolymer technology. The innovation aims to not only cut carbon emissions compared to traditional Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), but also promises zero use of water. The new tech, IISc team claims, would offer 15-20% cost advantage . The startup, Novacret claims that for every square foot of pavers it produces, it saves approximately 2.04 kg of CO2 emissions as compared to OPC. When ET spoke to one of the four cofounders, Nanjunda Rao K S who is also chief research scientist at IISc said, “ Geopolymer technology involves using industrial byproducts like fly ash from thermal power plants and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) from the steel industry as binding materials.” He added that initially fly ash and GGBS were used only as partial replacements for Portland cement in concrete but now act as complete replacement. “The benefits are significant, geopolymer-based materials achieve full strength in just three days in tropical climates like India, compared to the 28 days required for Portland cement.” The material is suitable for precast construction, where components like paving blocks can be made in advance, studies by the startup have highlighted.

Government wants Indian Road Congress to develop international standards for tunnel, bridge construction
Nitin Gadkari has asked the Indian Road Congress to develop international standards and codes for development of bridges and tunnels to ensure best quality construction. “Common policy will help all stakeholders. I have suggested Indian Road Congress to come up with common standards for construction of bridges and tunnels, though I understand construction of tunnels depends on the geology of the terrain or the place,” he said while virtually addressing the Assocham’s Annual Infrastructure Conference on Tuesday. Commenting on the need for a good quality as well as cost effective construction, Gadkari said, the quality of national highways in the country is not up to the mark and we need technological innovations to develop best quality infrastructure which is also economically viable.

Prince Harry vs. Prince William net worth breakdown: Annual income, Netflix & Spotify deal, and other assets
Duchy of Cornwall, Harry and Meghan have built their fortune in Hollywood through partnerships with Netflix, Spotify, and other ventures. The Duchy of Cornwall, worth £1.2 billion, provides the Prince of Wales a substantial annual income. Following his inheritance of the estate in September 2022, William’s income soared, reaching £23.1 million for 2023-24. According to Newsweek, this marked a significant increase from the £5.7 million he shared annually with Harry before the Sussexes stepped back as working royals in 2020. In contrast, the Sussexes’ wealth is rooted in their media projects, including a $100 million Netflix deal, a $20 million Spotify contract, and Harry’s $20 million advance for his memoir, Spare. Harry also serves as Chief Impact Officer at BetterUp, while Meghan has invested in wellness brands like Clevr Blends and Highbrow Hippie.

Terence Corcoran: Chrystia Freeland's fiscal legacy is only half the story
In the lead-up to the stunning resignation of Chrystia Freeland as Canada’s minister of finance, the story provided by the mysterious sources not authorized to leak secrets to the media was that Freeland and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a disagreement over whether to distribute $250 cheques to every Canadian earning less than $150,000. It looks like the unauthorized source was speaking truth. In her letter of resignation, which reads like an attack on Trudeau, Freeland says the government needs to keep its “fiscal powder dry” and should be “eschewing costly political gimmicks.”

IT industry boosts freshers' hiring as growth resumes
Expansion of the workforce base will also directly stabilise margins with the operating metrics such as utilisation and offshore mix at near peak levels for most software service providers. Experts say this is a key pillar for margin upside and companies are hiring freshers and investing in training facilities to stabilise the pyramid structure after a lull of the past almost two years.
