Fall in call market volumes makes transmission of repo rate tricky
Bank of India (RBI) is faced with is the visible clout of various money market segments at the cost of the interbank call money market, which is the official platform through which the central bank seeks to pass through its interest rate actions. The overnight money market segment, which is used by various financial sector players for immediate funding requirements, is broadly made up of the call money market, the tri-party repo (Treps) market and the market repo segment. According to the RBI's monetary policy framework, the weighted average call rate (WACR) is the operating target through which the central bank aims to «facilitate transmission of repo rate changes through the entire financial system». This implies that whenever the RBI raises or lowers the repo rate, the WACR aligns with the new benchmark policy rate and accordingly financial market instruments of various tenures that use the call rate as a basis for overnight funding costs go on to reflect the central bank's rate changes.

Sudha Murty’s childhood dream fulfilled: She builds temple in TN village
Sudha Murty has quietly built a temple in a remote village in Tamil Nadu, fulfilling her long-cherished desire. A temple has come up at Ivanallur village in Mayiladuthurai district with Lord Shiva as the presiding deity. The village, with about 2000, had a few ancient idols of Shiva, Parvathi, Ganesha, Subramanya, Nandi and others placed in a small hut. The villagers regularly offered pooja, though the site lacked a proper roof or structure. “When I was young, my grandfather used to tell me stories from the Vijayanagar empire. Scholars believed a person’s life becomes complete if he or she imparts knowledge to others, helps the needy, builds tanks and temples alike. I have the satisfaction of being part of many of these, like rejuvenation of ancient tanks and temples, but never built a temple from scratch. With the Ivanallur temple, my desire is fulfilled,” Murty, also a Rajya Sabha member, told ET.

Satcom companies, telcos speak in 2 voices on spectrum price
satellite spectrum administratively for 20 years at minimal charges, while telecom operators Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are pushing for allocation at market-determined prices to ensure a level playing field. Satcom companies and telcos will be fighting for a share of the wireless broadband market in India, which is poised for strong growth. The firms have submitted their recommendations to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), which will now come out with recommendations on the pricing and other modalities concerning the spectrum. Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea, though, have sought reissuance or a supplementary consultation paper as the current paper does not cover key issues, including the level playing field.

When crosswinds forced an IndiGo flight to take off immediately after touchdown
IndiGo flight from Jaipur to Chennai on Saturday caused confusion among approximately 160 passengers when it took off again soon after landing at Chennai airport. Airport authorities explained that the incident was due to crosswinds affecting the landing. The aircraft touched down on the main runway beyond the threshold point, prompting the pilot to take immediate action. Realizing there might not be enough runway space to slow down safely, the pilot decided to take off again promptly. No passengers were harmed during the incident. Flight 6E265 from Jaipur usually arrives in Chennai at 1:05 pm. On Saturday, the flight arrived earlier, around 12:45 pm. However, due to crosswinds, the pilot was unable to land at the runway's start, and the plane touched down in the middle. The pilot then took off immediately, circled around, and landed again at 12:58 pm.

Diwali around the corner, edible oil prices soar, dulling household, restaurant budgets
Palm oil prices have risen by 37% over the past month, impacting household budgets and increasing costs for restaurants, hotels, and sweet shops that use the oil for preparing snacks, TOI reported. Mustard oil, a commonly used oil in households, has seen a 29% price increase in the same period. This rise in oil prices comes as retail inflation reached a nine-month high of 5.5% in September, driven by high vegetable and food prices. This development has reduced the chances of the Reserve Bank of India cutting interest rates for now.

Nirmala Sitharaman calls for fair and accurate sovereign ratings to ensure capital for emerging economies at IMF meeting
Nirmala Sitharaman raised the issue for fairness and accuracy in sovereign ratings for emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) during her address at the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) 2024 Annual Meeting. Speaking in Washington, D.C., at the IMFC Plenary session on «Managing Director's Global Policy Agenda,» on Friday, Sitharaman emphasized that sovereign ratings should more accurately reflect the economic fundamentals of EMDEs, ensuring fair access to capital and improved ability to attract private investment. «There is need for sovereign ratings to adequately account for EMDEs economic fundamentals to ensure the cost of capital for them and their ability to attract private capital is factored in,» Sitharaman said.
