RBI announces reduction in the quantum of the government’s treasury bill sales
liquidity conditions, the central bank has announced a steep reduction in the quantum of the government’s treasury bill sales and a new selection of bonds for the Centre’s buyback operations to aid freeing up cash for banks. Liquidity conditions in the banking system tightened considerably this month, largely due to a muted pace of government spending amid the ongoing general elections, market participants said. Tight liquidity conditions increase cost of funds for banks, especially at a time when credit growth continues to outpace deposit growth by a long margin. Higher borrowing costs for banks pushes up the cost of borrowing across the economy. So far in May, average daily deficit liquidity as measured by banks’ borrowing from the RBI was at Rs 1.2 lakh crore.

Despite post-Covid rebound, many US voters prefer Donald Trump over Joe Biden
Donald Trump the edge over Joe Biden on the economy in poll after poll. That's even as the Biden years have been the best time to find work since the 1960s, and the US has bounced back from the pandemic with stronger growth than international peers such as the EU, UK and Japan and stronger growth overall than under President Trump. Instead, voters this year are focused on the steep jump in prices from the post-pandemic surge in inflation.

India's spice export may fall 40 pc if EtO contamination issue not resolved quickly: FISS
FISS) on Friday said India's spice export may decline nearly 40 per cent in FY25 if the issue of ethylene oxide or EtO contamination in spices meant for exports is not addressed at the earliest. The statement came against the backdrop of Hong Kong and Singapore banning the sale of popular brands MDH and Everest after detecting carcinogenic chemical ethylene oxide in their products, leading to a mandatory recall from shelves. In 2023-24, India's spice exports totalled USD 4.25 billion, accounting for 12 per cent share of global spice exports. «Lot of exporters have orders on their hands and they have been halted to an extent after that episode. As per our estimate, spice exports could be affected by 40 per cent of the volume this year if the issue is not resolved quickly,» said Tejas Gandhi, Secretary of FISS, an association of nearly 600 spice traders, exporters and farmers from across the country.
