COST Extreme Action Enterprise Mind Need to keep in mind ESG cost math: ITC's Sanjiv Puri
small enterprises need to be kept in mind so that they do not become inflationary and impact growth, Sanjiv Puri, chairman and managing director, ITC, told ET. «We have to think of the solutions so that we are not creating a structurally inflationary environment, which will not be good for growth,» Puri said on the sidelines of the CII B20 Summit in New Delhi, pointing to the need for the development of models that are economically viable. Puri, the head of the ESG in Business Action Council, noted technology accessibility, funding at attractive rates and sharing of cluster-based assets as solutions to control the cost of ESG compliance for MSMEs. «If everything becomes cost plus, the environment is going to become inflationary, which will ultimately impact consumption,» Puri noted, highlighting that the finance minister, in her B20 address, also made the point of containing inflation. Puri also highlighted that larger players also had a responsibility, and the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development was working on making a simplified ESG framework and ensuring that it percolates to the rest of the supply chain. «We have made a toolkit for MSMEs,» he said. The chairman of the Indian multinational company noted that the market needed both incentives and disincentives to implement ESG and evolve into a regulatory pathway. «It has to be mandated with market-based incentives and disincentives.

COST Disney LGBT CEO Parke show Walt Disney: How difficult will it be for Bob Iger to turn the company around?
Bob Iger led a 45-minute town hall session in Burbank, California. During the exchange, Iger took on questions from anxious employees on thorny issues like the recruitment ban, the outlook for conventional television enterprises, the possible sale of the company, and the company’s stance on LGBTQ concerns that had plagued the term of his predecessor Bob Chapek. Regarding the latter, Iger emphasised that a fundamental principle of Disney's storytelling was embracing inclusion, acceptance and tolerance, and it was crucial for the company to uphold this. But his big message to the employees in the end was: “The status quo is gone.” As he has set about reshaping Disney, the path has been arduous for Iger. The CEO has been dealing with a spectrum of challenges, from tackling streaming losses and dipping linear subscriptions to navigating advertising headwinds. Concurrently, he has had to manage an internal reorganisation that empowers creative divisions for content authority and distribution, while addressing vital cultural aspects like LGBT inclusion. Then there’s the key task of identifying a successor. The CEO has acknowledged that the task of turning around the Disney business has proven more challenging than he anticipated. Over the past year, Disney's stock price has fallen by 30%. On August 25, the stock closed at $83.27, mirroring levels last seen in May 2014. In the June quarter, revenue climbed 4% to $22.33 billion, yet missed forecasts. A $2.7-billion restructuring expense led to a $460-million loss, compared with last year's $1.4 billion profit. Iger's urgent focus is to halt the decline of the TV market, curb streaming losses, and arrest the stock price slide.

COST UPS Target Mobile Jio looking to push Jio Bharat phone sales
Reliance Jio is focusing on expanding its consumer base by pushing sales of the Jio Bharat phone, veering away from paying high incentives to encourage mobile number portability (MNP), as the telecom market leader looks to moderate sales and marketing costs, industry executives and experts said. The telco saw sales and general administration costs sharply increase over the past few quarters — to ₹540 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2023, from ₹310 crore in the fourth quarter of FY22, indicating a jump of 74% over six quarters. «Jio is evidently looking to expand the subscriber base, but it is now focusing on capturing the feature-phone market by migrating users to the Jio Bharat phone, rather than encourage MNP since that was resulting in a lot of negative landing,» an executive with knowledge of the situation said. Telcos give their distributors incentives for enabling port-ins from rival networks.
