Pegatron India's iPhone factory shutdown to go into Day 3 after fire: Sources
Apple supplier Pegatron's India iPhone factory is expected to extend into Wednesday and disruptions could last longer as authorities investigate a fire at the Taiwanese firm's only India plant, four sources said. Pegatron described the Sunday fire as a «spark incident» which caused no injuries and said has «no financial or operational impact to Pegatron Corporation», but called off all assembly shifts for Monday and Tuesday, Reuters previously reported. Four sources briefed on the matter said Wednesday shifts were also unlikely. One of them said damage was being repaired at the plant in Chengalpattu area near the southern city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu state, and in the worst case the shutdown could last the entire week. One of the sources said Apple representatives were collaborating with Pegatron after the incident. Apple and Pegatron did not respond to requests for comment. Pegatron has asked independent surveyors to assess the fire damage, a fifth source said. The disruptions are the latest to impact Apple suppliers in India, a country where the U.S.

Indians willing to spend nearly Rs 2 lakh annually out of pocket for upskilling: Survey
education, showing the growing appetite for upskilling to suit industry demands, finds a new survey. The survey of professionals from a diverse set of sectors in the country found that one in every two Indians are ready to fund further education for themselves, their children or their family within the upcoming 12 months. The Emeritus Global Workplace Skills Study 2023 from professional education Emeritus firm shows that education ranks high among Indians’ priorities even as the survey found two in three respondents admitting to spending their money cautiously focusing on essentials such as healthcare, medicine, groceries, etc., amid job layoffs and salary cuts globally. The trend of Indians spending on further education out of pocket stood out from most other parts of the world, where upskilling is being funded largely by organisations. The main motivations for Indian professionals to pursue further education included increased job security, a rise in self-confidence, developing leadership skills, and staying up-to-date with industry knowledge. The emphasis on continued learning in Indian society was also visible from the number of hours that professionals are investing into upskilling.

Digital nomad visas expand as Spain, Canada vie for global talent
Consequently the list of attractive destinations cutting red tape and offering remote work visa schemes is getting longer. It includes more locations in the Global North, as industrialized nations are often described. That’s because the competition is for long-term talent, not temporary tourists. As of 2023, Spain’s residency visa is open to “international teleworkers,” which allows digital nomads to live in the land of Don Quixote, paella and Mediterranean beaches for a period of up to a year while they work remotely for an employer that’s based outside of Spain. You can apply at a Spanish embassy or consulate in your home country. If you are already in Spain on a tourist visa, you can submit an application for a residency card as a digital nomad that will be valid for three years, and renewable for two.

As Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy rise, some Indian Americans have mixed feelings
When Reddy and his wife, Chandra Gangareddy, immigrants from southern India, settled in the Des Moines suburbs in September 2004, they could count the number of Indian American families on one hand. Only one Indian American had ever served in Congress at the time, and none had dared to mount a bid for the White House. Now, for the first time in the nation's history, two Indian Americans — Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy — are serious presidential contenders who regularly invoke their parents' immigrant roots.

India to fix biggest subsidy schemes - food & LPG - that cost Rs 4 lk cr a year
NITI Aayog will soon undertake the evaluation of India’s biggest subsidy schemes, the National Food Security Act and LPG subsidy, to rationalise expenditure, prevent leakage and ensure benefits are reaching the eligible candidates. The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office, which is an attached office of NITI Aayog, has invited proposals for a central coordinating agency for evaluation of the two schemes, which together cost the exchequer nearly Rs 4,00,000 crore a year. “The government implements one the largest public food and nutritional safety nets in the world through the National Food Security Act (NFSA), enacted in 2013. However, despite the large public expenditure, gains in the food security and nutritional outcomes in India have been slow with the country accounting for roughly 30% of the global burden of hunger,” the DMEO said in the RFP document. Explaining the rationale behind evaluation of the LPG subsidy, the DMEO further said that India is the third largest energy consumer in the world after China and the USA. “The current consumption of LPG in India has risen to 12.3% of total petroleum products compared to 1.13% of kerosene.

Mint Explainer: Why India is affected by Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh takeover

India permits 75,000 tonnes non-basmati white rice exports to UAE
India has allowed the export of non-basmati white rice to the tune of 75,000 tonnes to the UAE. Notably, the export of non-basmati white rice was prohibited from July 20 to check the domestic prices and ensure domestic food security. The exports to UAE are permitted through National Cooperative Exports Limited, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in its notification on late Monday evening. While amending the export policy, DGFT maintained that the export will be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the government to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their government. Last month, India had decided to allow the export of rice to «meet the food security requirements» of Singapore. West African country Benin is one of the major importers of non-basmati rice from India.

economic cooperation – in 2023 with Russia for the first time getting into the three top trade partners of India due to contribution of International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC), CEO of RZD Logistics (top Russian logistics company that operates INSTC) Dmitry Murev told ET. The export from Russia to India in the 2022-2023 financial year increased by 4.7 times and activation of INSTC is one of the most important factors that contributed to this, according to Murev. “Our company managed to build strong partnership with the leading participants of transport and logistics industry of India, Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, which, in particular, allowed to cut the net cost of the end-to-end transportation service along the Eastern route of INSTC by 50% since August of 2022,” Murev informed. All three branches of INSTC – Western, Trans-Caspian and Eastern – are working. Each of these routes has its own infrastructure characteristics and perspectives, uniting certain groups of member countries of INSTC, with India and Russia being actively involved in the work of the corridor on all three routes, RZD CEO pointed out. Aviation leasing watchdog downgrading India is not a major concern: IndiGo CEO Elbers
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers to ET Now after the Aviation Working Group (AWG) for the second time cut India's compliance rating with international leasing laws and kept the country on a watchlist with a negative outlook amid a dispute between local airline Go First and its aircraft lessors. The move by AWG, a UK-based entity that monitors leasing and financing laws, came as bankrupt budget carrier Go First is locked in a legal tussle with aircraft lessors seeking to repossess jets. The IndiGo CEO called India as one of the most competitive aviation markets in the world and said there is also a lot of competition in the market. Elbers was speaking at the conference of the All India Management Association (AIMA) in the national capital. IndiGo is the country's largest carrier with a domestic market share of more than 63 per cent and is also expanding its international operations. The airline connects 32 international and 81 domestic destinations. Elbers said India is an incredible and one of the most competitive aviation markets in the world. IndiGo is going through a «maturing phase», he said and stressed on the need for having aviation hubs in India, which is under-served.

China says willing to play 'constructive' role in APEC's success
China is willing to play a «constructive» role in the success of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, its top diplomat said on Tuesday, after President Xi Jinping's absence at the annual Group of 20 summit in India. «As the world's largest developing country and an important member of APEC, China is willing to comply with the expectations of the international community and play a constructive role in the success of APEC this year,» said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Xi, with no official explanation, did not go to the G20 summit in New Delhi this month, with the Chinese premier, Li Qiang, attending in his place. That prompted the United States to say China was «giving up» on the G20 and was building an alternative world order. «Of course, we and all parties hope that the United States will recognise its responsibility as the host, demonstrate openness, fairness, inclusiveness, and responsibility, and create better conditions for the smooth holding of the meeting,» Wang said at a news conference, when asked whether Xi would attend APEC. Dialogue between China and the United States has been gradually resuming despite tensions between the two superpowers, especially over Taiwan.
