SC agrees to hear plea of NGO challenging reduction of age of consent
Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea by an NGO against any reduction in the age of consent, saying it jeopardises the interest of a large number of child victims of sexual abuse, especially girls. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra issued notice to the Centre and tagged the plea of 'Bachpan Bachao Andolan' with a pending petition filed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The NCPCR had challenged last year's order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court which said that a minor Muslim girl can marry a person of her choice. The apex court on Friday sought the Centre's response on the issue. The plea of NGO, besides seeking a slew of directions and guidelines, has also sought a directive to the courts to refrain from making observations regarding the minor victim's casual relationship and promiscuous attitude while dealing with the criminal proceedings under the POCSO Act.

Requested Karnataka Guv, CM, Dy CM not to take trouble of coming early to receive me: PM Modi
Bengaluru visit to meet ISRO scientists, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday alleged that he purportedly barred Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar from receiving him at the HAL Airport. Meanwhile, a war of words erupted between BJP MLA and former minister R Ashoka and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar over «ignoring» protocol to receive the Prime Minister at the airport. Modi flew down to Bengaluru around 6 AM directly from the Greek capital of Athens to interact with ISRO scientists involved in the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon. Addressing a large number of people gathered outside the HAL airport, the PM said since he was coming from a far-off place (Athens) he did not know what time he would reach here, and he requested Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM Shivakumar not to take the trouble of coming to receive him as he would return soon after paying tributes to ISRO scientists. «So, I had requested them that when I pay a formal visit, they definitely follow protocol,» Modi said. «They cooperated and I am thankful and grateful to them,» he said. Ramesh alleged that the PM was irritated with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for felicitating the ISRO scientists before him, and termed Modi barring the Chief Minister and his deputy as «petulant petty politics». Siddaramaiah on Thursday visited the Missions Operations Complex at ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) and felicitated ISRO chief S Somanath and his team on the successful touch down of Chandrayaan-3 mission's lander on the Lunar surface. «The government will officially honour them by organising a special programme at the Banquet hall at Vidhana Soudha.

EU looking at petroleum products made from Russian crude oil in India finding way to its market
petroleum products made from Russian crude oil in India finding way to the European market, saying it defies the purpose of the sanctions against Moscow that are aimed at reducing its ability to finance the war with Ukraine. The European Union's Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for Trade, Valdis Dombrovskis, said oil products processed from Russian crude oil are arriving at the European market in «large quantities» and the grouping is looking at ways to deal with it. In an interaction with a small group of journalists, the EU Vice President, currently on a visit to India, accused Russia of using its energy supplies, and food as «tools» of «war and manipulation» to continue its attack on Ukraine. On the issue of food, Dombrovskis cited Russia withdrawing from the Black Sea grain initiative and blocking Ukraine's export of food grain to the world market. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February last year, the Western powers have imposed a series of sanctions on Moscow including a price cap on Russian oil by G7-plus nations, in order to reduce its ability to finance the war on Ukraine.

L&T, IOCL & Renew form a joint venture for green hydrogen
EPC major Larsen & Toubro, refining and marketing major Indian Oil Corporation and renewable energy player Renew have formed an equal joint venture to set up their green hydrogen business. The joint venture company is called GH4India Private Limited where the companies will hold 33.33% each, L&T said in a regulatory filing. The companies had last April signed a binding term sheet for the formation of a joint venture company to develop the nascent green hydrogen sector in India. «The joint venture is formed for the purpose of development of green hydrogen and its derivatives (including green ammonia, methanol, etc) production assets and associated renewable assets through any model of ownership and operatorship,'' L & T said in a regulatory filing. Authorised capital of the company is Rs 3 crore (30,00,000 equity shares of Rs 10 each). For countries like India, with its ever-increasing oil and gas import bill, green hydrogen can also help provide crucial energy security by reducing the overall dependence on imported fossil fuels. While nearly all hydrogen produced in India today is grey, it is estimated that demand for hydrogen will be 12 MMT by 2030 and around 40% of the element produced in the country (around 5 MMT) will be green, as per the draft National Hydrogen Mission guidelines. By 2050, nearly 80% of India’s hydrogen is projected to be ‘green’ – produced by renewable electricity and electrolysis. Green hydrogen may become the most competitive route for hydrogen production by around 2030.
