Heat waves becoming more frequent, deadly, study finds
Europe will be particularly affected. Heat waves of the kind we are currently experiencing are particularly deadly for the elderly, the sick and the poor, the researchers said. The 2003 heat wave, which saw temperatures in Europe reach 47.5 degrees Celsius, was one of the worst natural disasters of recent decades, claiming an estimated 45,000 to 70,000 victims in the space of a few weeks, they said. The researchers from ETH Zurich in Switzerland found that such heat waves could become the new norm in the coming years. Since 2013, they have been systematically collecting data on daily heat-related excess mortality for 748 cities and communities in 47 countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the US and Canada. The researchers used this dataset to calculate the relationship between the average daily temperature and mortality for all 748 locations. From this, they were able to establish each location's ideal temperature, where excess mortality is at its lowest.

BRS to zero in on 'world's most expensive' LPG, steep fuel prices
Telangana Assembly elections, slated to be held in November-December this year. While the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is likely to corner the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the high inflation rate, the 'world's costliest' LPG and steep hike in fuel prices, it may come under attack from the latter and also from the Congress over Telangana recording the highest inflation rate consistently among all states. The BJP is likely to hit back at BRS for not reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to pass on the benefits to the customers despite several states slashing VAT. The BJP leaders may also cite the fact that Telangana has been witnessing inflation ratethat is consistently the highest among the states. The Congress is likely to blame the policies of both the BJP and the BRS governments for the price rise. While attacking the BJP over the skyrocketing prices of fuel and LPG, its leaders may also slam the BRS for not reducing VAT on fuel and failing to check the high inflation. According to the Economic Survey 2022-23, Telangana logged the highest inflation rate in the country.

Growing list of Indian-origin CEOs at top firms impresses Elon Musk
Elon Musk is impressed at the way Indian-origin people have taken over as CEOs of most of the top tech companies, as well as some of the non-tech organisations, and the list is only growing. By holding top positions, the Indian-origin people are earning millions of dollars which puts them among the highest paid CEOs in the US. When the World of Statistics posted on X (formerly Twitter) the list of Indian-origin people at top companies, Musk reacted late on Saturday: «Impressive». His followers reacted, saying «Indians are some of the hardest working people». India is even the «CEO of Moon's South Pole,» a Musk follower chuckled, after the country successfully landed its Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission. Currently, Sanjay Mehrotra is the CEO of Micron Technology; Shantanu Narayen is the CEO of Adobe; Satya Nadella is Chairman and CEO of Microsoft; Sunder Pichai is the CEO of Alphabet and Google; Jay Chaudhry is the CEO of Zscaler which is a cloud security company; Arvind Krishna is the CEO of IBM; Neal Mohan is the CEO of YouTube; and George Kurian is the CEO of NetApp, among the top tech giants. Leena Nair broke all barriers by becoming the first ever Indian-origin global CEO of French luxury fashion house, Chanel.

Kimchi, sausage & tempura: How 1980s Chennai became a hub of culinary & cultural diversity
Chennai in the 1980s might have seemed an unlikely place to sample kvass and kimchi. August 22 marks Madras Day, when the city was founded in 1639. It has grown from a one-day event to a full month celebrating the city’s often overlooked past.

Saurabh Mukherjea on the positive as well as negative triggers lying ahead of Indian market
Saurabh Mukherjea, Founder, Marcellus Investment Managers, says “the positive trigger is the China play because the scale of China's unwind is such that I find it hard to believe that it will not trigger broader connections in commodity prices and then on to on to inflationary numbers both for America and for India. The negative one in India's case is that we have got so many elections ahead of us. We got five assembly elections through the winter and then obviously the big one in the summer.” What could be the trigger now for the market? Earnings are good. Inflation is benign. Macro will keep on getting ups and downs here but in general is steady. Flows have been decent. The outlook by corporate India is not that bad. So for markets to move higher, what is next?If I have to pick one positive trigger and one negative trigger, the positive trigger is the China play because the scale of China's unwind is such that I find it hard to believe that it will not trigger broader connections in commodity prices and then on to on to inflationary numbers both for America and for India.
