Can catastrophe bonds save India from the financial burden of natural disasters?
insurance product recently introduced in global markets — natural catastrophe bonds, or 'cat bonds' — is being discussed. This unique hybrid insurance-cum-securitised financial product transfers hazard risk from the victim nation to global financial markets. Cat bonds can lower the risk curve for low-frequency, high-impact hazards. Given India's credit standing and scale of its hazard risk profile, it could be cost-effective to sponsor such an instrument, through an intermediary like World Bank or ADB. The intermediary holds the principal amount until maturity as surety for the payout to the sponsoring country and assures its return to bond investors on the maturity of the cat bond. Since catastrophe risk is difficult to forecast, disaster scientists assume that such a high-risk investment would be unprofitable for investors. On the contrary, risk-seeking investors find the disaster risk curve most attractive for diversification, since climate events are not correlated with financial market movements.

Why South Korean and Japanese women are choosing American or European husbands
Data reveals a clear preference among these women for Western partners. In South Korea, 28% of international marriages in 2023 involved American men, followed by 18% with Chinese men. Marriages to men from other Western countries, including France, Italy, Germany, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, accounted for approximately 17%. A similar trend appears in Japan, where American men were the top choice among foreign grooms for Japanese women. Japanese men seeking foreign brides, however, primarily choose women from China and the Philippines.

In South Korea's crisis playbook, currency stability is paramount
Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on Tuesday night, plunging the country into its worst crisis in decades, his stunned finance minister knew his priorities: throw everything at defending the currency. By around 11 p.m., Choi Sang-mok, who was among the majority of cabinet members who opposed martial law, had set up an emergency meeting at the Seoul Bankers Club, an unofficial meeting place for top policymakers from the central bank, finance ministry and banking and markets regulators. As soldiers stormed the nation's parliament, Korea's top four financial authorities, known as F4, activated an emergency playbook that had been used during past crises, scrambling to head off a crippling selloff in the won before Asian markets awoke. Choi led discussions between the authorities, three people familiar with the meeting told Reuters, with the Bank of Korea responsible for efforts to stabilise the currency.

Why are our shrines, Masjids being targeted, asks J&K CM Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that Muslims were being victimised and their masjids and shrines targeted under a well-planned conspiracy, despite the country being secular as per the Constitution. Abdullah told reporters here on the sidelines of the annual day of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar that if someone doesn't believe that this country is secular let them remove the word 'secular' through an Act in Parliament. Abdullah said Muslim victimisation is happening in the name of «not appeasing the community». «Why are our darasgahs and masjids being targeted under a well-thought conspiracy? I have repeated it several times that you may believe in not appeasing the Muslim community. We also don't ask for any appeasement. But not appeasing us (Muslims) doesn't mean you will target us. Don't target and victimise us in the name of not appeasing us,» said Abdullah.
