How NRIs can use UPI for instant, no-fee transactions abroad
Non-resident Indians (NRIs) now have a faster, more convenient option than traditional wire transfers to send money to family or make payments in India. How the US election could change the direction of trade winds for India
US Presidential election of 2024 is one the most watched political events of recent times especially as the outcome will have a huge impact on international trade. In the past few decades, many American politicians have talked about attracting manufacturing investment and jobs back to the country after the manufacturing of goods consumed by Americans has spread across the globe and manufacturing jobs have dwindled in the USA. Countries that export substantially to the USA or have been the destination of manufacturing investment in the past three decades are likely to be targets of trade action in the near future. In any case, the countries with whom the USA runs a large trade deficit are on the radar of at least one potential aspirant to the White House. India is one of those countries. The US happens to be the largest destination for Indian merchandise exports. In 2023-24, imports into India from the USA amounted to $42.2 billion, while exports from India were valued at $77.52 billion.

Equity cult is a non-starter: Why we are still a country where only a small percentage of the population invests in equity
equity cult to spread widely after the euphoria of the first set of financial reforms in 1984, memories of money made in the Reliance public offer, and the market boom of 1985 that spawned financial journalism and company analysis for public consumption. Forty years later, we are still a country with a small percentage of the population investing in equity. Investors in equity still focus on IPOs and trading. They like the idea of making money quickly and see equity as some skill-based gamble that pays off. A small group intensively pursues equity analysis and invests in stocks with long-term conviction. Mutual funds, portfolio management services (PMS) and alternative investment funds (AIF) are part of many household portfolios, but that growth has been gradual, taking its time to entrench itself. The majority that lies outside these pursuits still remains sceptical, unwilling and somewhat scared. When I tell them that equity investing is like participating in the success stories you see around you in every day life (Peter Lynch made that persuasive case so many years ago), they are unable to grasp it as an implementable idea. Do your children go to government schools? Who is is your mobile service provider? Which bank do you have an account with? Where do your grown-up children work? Who delivers your grocery and food? I ask these questions to simple investors who care to listen. They understand that the economy is now driven by private players, not the government.

OPEC+ agrees to delay December output hike for one month, sources say
oil output increase by one month, three sources from the producer group told Reuters on Sunday, as weak demand notably from China and rising supply outside the group maintain downward pressure on the oil market. The OPEC+ group, combining the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus Russia and other allies, was scheduled to raise output by 180,000 barrels per day in December. It had already delayed the increase from October because of falling prices. However, weak demand and economic data raised concern in the group about adding more supply, sources told Reuters last week ahead of the decision to postpone the hike made on Sunday after consultations between ministers.

Jamiat cautions TDP, JD(U), says even 'crutches' will not escape responsibility if Waqf bill passed
Waqf (Amendment) Bill, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Sunday urged TDP's Chandrababu Naidu and JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar to heed the sentiments of Muslims on the matter and said the parties within the NDA that claim to be secular must distance themselves from supporting this «dangerous» legislation. It also cautioned that if the legislation is passed, the «two crutches» on which the BJP-led government is running at the Centre would not be able to escape responsibility. Jamiat chief Maulana Arshad Madani made the assertion at the prominent Muslim body's 'Save Constitution Convention' held here at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. «People of the country defeated the BJP. They did not accept their policies. This government is dependent on two crutches — a strong one is Chandrababu and the other is Bihar's Nitish Kumar. I had invited him (Naidu), he excused himself but had sent his party's vice president Nawab Jan. I look at this positively as he will convey the sentiments of the people gathered here,» Madani said, gesturing to the large gathering of Jamiat functionaries and supporters.

A crowd of Spain's flood survivors toss mud and shout insults at King Felipe VI
King Felipe VI and top government officials were pelted with mud by a crowd of enraged survivors of Spain's floods during the first visit Sunday by the country's leaders to the center of the suffering. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was evacuated from the scene, according to Spanish broadcaster RTVE, when the official contingent started to walk the mud-covered streets of Paiporta, one of the hardest hit areas where over 60 people perished and thousands of lives were shattered. Police had to step in with some officers on horseback to keep back the crowd of several dozens who hurled mud and wielded shovels and poles threateningly in the air.

Will bring stringent law to prevent transfer of tribal land to infiltrators in Jharkhand: Amit Shah
Amit Shah on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the JMM-led government in Jharkhand, accusing it of «patronising Bangladeshi infiltrators for vote bank politics» and asserted that if the BJP was voted to power in the state, it will enact stringent legislation to prevent transfer of tribal land to illegal immigrants. Shah also announced that Naxalism would be eradicated from the country by March 2026 and that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be implemented in Jharkhand without impacting the tribal population. Addressing a BJP rally at Dhalbhumgarh in Ghatshila, Shah claimed that the tribal population in Jharkhand was declining due to the Hemant Soren government treating «Bangladeshi infiltrators as its vote bank.» «Bangladeshi infiltration is causing a sharp decline in tribal population in Jharkhand, especially in Santhal Parganas and Kolhan regions… the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance is encouraging it for petty political gains,» he alleged.

NGT flags solid, sewage waste management issues in Gujarat, Odisha
National Green Tribunal while monitoring the status of waste management across the country's states and Union Territories flagged several issues last month after analysing the progress reports submitted by Gujarat and Odisha. A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted that the two states filed separate progress reports detailing the steps taken to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court's directions regarding solid waste management rules and establishing adequate sewage treatment plants (STPs). Last year, the tribunal imposed environmental compensation (EC) on various states for the gaps in waste management, including Rs 2,100 crore on Gujarat, which had to be kept in a ring-fenced account. It stopped short of imposing the fine on Odisha after the state government gave an undertaking that it would set aside Rs 1,138 crore to address the gaps. Regarding solid waste management in Gujarat, the bench also comprising judicial member Justice Sudhir Kumar Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel said, «The gap reported in waste processing is almost at the same level as was reported earlier, which is on account of not having waste processing facilities commensurate with waste generation.»

Glacial lakes and other water bodies across the Himalayan region saw a 10.81 per cent increase in area from 2011 to 2024 due to climate change, signalling a heightened risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), according to a government report. The Central Water Commission's (CWC) report, which was accessed by PTI, states that with a 33.7 per cent expansion of the surface area, the lakes in India experienced an even more substantial rise. «The total inventory area of glacial lakes within India was 1,962 hectares during the year 2011 which has increased to 2,623 hectares during the year 2024 (September). There is a 33.7 per cent increase in area,» the report said.
