Six women among nine Maoists killed in Bastar
Maoists, including six women, were killed in an encounter with security personnel in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, taking the total number of killings in the state this year to an all-time high of 154 deaths (in graphics). The gunfight broke out at around 10.30 am in the forests along the border of Dantewada and Bijapur districts when a joint team of security forces was out on an anti-Maoist operation, said inspector general of police, Bastar range, Sundarraj P. Personnel belonging to the District Reserve Guard and the Central Reserve Police Force were involved in the operation, which was launched based on inputs about the presence of Maoists belonging to its west Bastar division unit, according to CRPF officials. The intermittent exchange of fire lasted for a long time, following which bodies of nine Maoists in 'uniform' were recovered from the spot, they added. A huge cache of weapons was also seized from the encounter site. Union home minister Amit Shah, during his three-day visit last month, had said that the government is committed to completely eradicating Maoism from the country before March 2026. Shah has also sought the creation of a special investigation agency in states for probe and prosecution on the lines of National Investigation Agency and has urged Chhattisgarh government to come up with a new surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy.

US election 2024: Kamala Harris has her hand on India's raw nerve
Indian Americans are in the spotlight in the US presidential election. Pro-Trump Vivek Ramaswamy and Usha Chilukuri Vance, the wife of Republican Party vice-presidential nominee JD Vance, have created waves in the media. But the focus of Indian Americans is Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, a Baptist Christian married to a Jew who was born to a Jamaican-born father and an Indian-born mother. Many see the possible victory of Harris as a victory of American Indians, even though Harris rarely talks about her Indian roots.

China to launch anti-dumping probes into Canadian canola, chemicals
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last month announced tariffs of 100 percent on Chinese EVs, accusing Beijing of «not playing by the same rules as other countries» in areas like environmental and labour standards. The United States and the European Union have also respectively slapped tariffs of 100 percent and 36 percent on Chinese EVs, arguing that Beijing unfairly subsidises domestic producers whose products then flood foreign markets and undercut local competitors.

Goldman Sachs says 'go for gold' as China weighs on other commodities
Goldman Sachs believes gold has the highest potential for a near-term price hike due to its status as a preferred hedge against risk, while weak demand from China has led to a «more selective, less constructive» view of other commodities. «Imminent Fed rate cuts are poised to bring Western capital back into the gold market, a component largely absent of the sharp gold rally observed in the last two years,» Goldman analysts said on Monday in a note titled 'Go for Gold'. Spot gold has gained 21% so far this year, breaking successive records and hitting a historic high of $2,531.60 per ounce on Aug. 20.
