thermal power producer, Adani Power, is planning to more than triple the capacity of its Kawai power plant in Rajasthan with an investment of up to ₹18,000 crore, said sources aware of the development.
The current capacity of the plant is 1,320 MW, which will be expanded in two phases of 1,600 MW each, taking it to 4,520 MW over the next few years. Kawai is located in the Atru Tehsil of Rajasthan's Baran district. The company has already given a ₹10,000 crore order to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd to execute the expansion plan.
Adani Power did not respond to an email seeking comment.
This move comes at a time when the company is setting up new plants and expanding existing ones in various parts of the country, and is also looking for acquisitions.
«It is planning to expand its thermal power capacity through organic as well as inorganic route as part of its strategy to double thermal power to about 31 GW,» said an official aware of the development. Adani Power currently has a capacity of 15 GW.
To facilitate its expansion plans, the company has secured extensive domestic fuel tie-ups under long- and medium-term contracts, it said in an analyst presentation on Tuesday.
«For fuel assurance, the company has secured new power purchase agreement bids for 6,400 MW linking pre-assigned mines from state allocations. It also has the enhancement of fuel availability and cost control through commercial mining licences at advantageous locations,» it said in the presentation.
