From the ashes of defunct telcos, there’s space for a new operator to rise
Also read | Allot or auction satellite telecom spectrum? Signal clarity, please Yet these are valuable bands because by squatting here, these companies have pushed up the costs of the competing bands for other telecom operators, and thus for the consumers. The never-ending legal disputes ensured that the department of telecom could not put these bands up for auction. Of course, the government, in its ceaseless attempt to maximise the revenue potential from auctions in the sector, possibly did not mind.

Opec heavyweights are cheating on their targets
death of Iran’s president and the escalating war in Gaza, prices of Brent crude, the global benchmark, have stayed within $2 of $82 a barrel since the start of May. Part of the reason why OPEC is failing to keep prices high is because its members are failing to keep to their output targets. In March the group’s leaders and Russia extended production cuts, vowing a reduction of 2.2m barrels a day (b/d), or 2% of global supply, until the end of June, on top of 3.7m b/d of previously agreed cuts for 2024.

Xi Jinping exposes cracks in China's governance model
Hong Kong: During President Vladimir Putin's visit to China in mid-May, he said Russia and China are «jointly committed to promoting the establishment of a more democratic multipolar world order». To countries that do consider themselves democratic, Putin's notion was laughable, for both China and Russia are ruled tightly by autocratic rulers who have no intention of losing their grip on power. In fact, Professor Steve Tsang, Director of the SOAS China Institute at SOAS University of London, told ANI, «The biggest challenge China faces in governance terms is the concentration of power in Xi's hands.»

Defence Ministry tightens weapons monitoring
defence ministry is tightening the monitoring of defence equipment being manufactured in India and has asked the industry to strictly follow end-user certification rules when it comes to exports, after some reports of equipment going into the «wrong hands» have come up. The Indian defence sector has seen a sharp increase in production of arms and weapons for both internal use and export orders in the past few years. Weapons manufacturing is on the rise throughout the world, given the Ukraine-Russia crisis, and multiple reports have emerged of weapons landing up on either side of the conflict without proper authorisation by the country of origin. The ministry is now looking to set up an internal portal that will monitor consumption patterns of imports being done by defence sector companies, particularly when it comes to explosives and primers.
