Career Gap country Olympics International Sporting athletics Olympics isn’t just a sports event, it’s a movement
reward every Paris Olympics Gold medallist with a cash award of $50,000. While many athletes, including Neeraj Chopra, welcomed the move, it has now sparked a global debate, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach expressing his concerns during an online media briefing recently. “The role of the international federations (IFs)…is they have to make every effort to try and close the gap between the athletes coming from privileged countries and those coming from less privileged countries. This is where the discussion is coming from (on the WA decision)”, said Bach. With the Olympic Games being the pinnacle of sports competitions globally, it is fair to reward athletes for their extraordinary feats. Considering the short career span of athletes, their financial well-being should be a priority. However, should the IOC follow the WA model? Is this the way forward for the Olympic movement? That’s where the disconnect arises. Unlike other sports competitions, the Olympics is a movement for global solidarity. It aims to unite the world through sport and bridge the gap between privilege and under-privilege. That’s why 90 percent of the IOC’s revenues are ploughed back to the member nations, with the hosts receiving $2.8 billion (Summer and Winter Games combined).

markets Racing Audi track country rights F1 now makes 3 stops a season in the United States. Could Miami become a victim of oversaturation?
Formula 1 is back in the United States for the first time in six months and the first stop is the Miami Grand Prix, the race that was supposed to be the American showpiece. But the sparkling debut of Las Vegas last November was rated as one of the best races of the 2023 season, and Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, is a stalwart event that caters to passionate F1 fans. Miami was the big party when it debuted in 2022 but the question is: Has its status fallen enough that Sunday's race is simply just the first of three events in what has traditionally been NASCAR country?

UPS Pool country International cricket Sporting Vanuatu, nation of just 3 lakh makes its presence felt in International cricket
Vanuatu. Let’s be honest and there’s no shame here: you did not even know that this was a country. It’s a string of islands east of the northern part of Australia in the Pacific and its last recorded population was 3.27 lakh people. Of these about 50% are ruled out from this story by virtue of being male. Of the 1.6 lakh remaining, you can leave out another half on the basis that they would be either too young or old to make a cricket team. And so, from a potential pool of 80,000 (a generous estimate because not everyone is interested in one sport), emerges a team that was in contention for a berth in a World Cup comprising 10 teams from across the globe.

Speaking in a rally in Davangere in Karnataka a day before campaigning ends in the state, the leader hit out at the Narendra Modi-led government, saying it was busy in corruption by making schemes. “He [Prime Minister Narendra Modi] talks very well about sabka saath, sabka vikas (everyone’s support, everyone’s progress), but does nothing for the poor. Meanwhile, the people of the country are suffering from unemployment, inflation and economic crisis,” she said. Accusing the PM of crony capitalism, she said he spoke of welfare but was never seen with the poor in villages. “All his rallies are with his rich businessmen friends. No wonder our country’s railways, aviation, ports and shipping are now in the hands of one man,” she added.

Waves Entertainment BURST Election Southern country folk Polling punches in a Southern state of mind
South during election time and things seem to be a little different here in Chennai from other parts of the country. Unlike in the East-West-North, I don't have any language to speak to people on the street, and my narrow sampling is from the educated, English-speaking class with which I come into contact. But even here, people are calmer, their disagreements articulate. Various kinds of psephological nerdiness are on full display, but without the accompanying rancour one is used to when arguing with say Bengalis, Punjabis or Hindi-belt folks. There's an almost destabilising absence of kinship and/or genitalic cuss words. People down here argue. But they also let the other person actually speak. Like totally weird, da. Everyone agrees that in the behemoth state of Tamil Nadu, things are going to go just as they have in the past. 'They can come and do as many rallies as they want. People will go to see also, because they are crudely entertaining. But as for votes, forget it. Their nonsense has never worked in these parts.'
