China to take 'necessary measures' after US curbs
China on Thursday said it would take "necessary measures" after the United States announced fresh sanctions aimed at crippling Russia's military and industrial capabilities, punishing companies in China and elsewhere that help Moscow acquire weapons for its war in Ukraine. In a sweeping package announced on Wednesday, the US treasury department targeted nearly 300 entities in Russia, China and other countries accused of supporting President Vladimir Putin's invasion. «The Chinese side urges the US to stop smearing and containing China and stop wantonly implementing illegal and unilateral sanctions,» a foreign ministry spokesman said in a message to AFP.

Govt calls meet to discuss measures to bring gloves under quality control
gloves, which are getting dumped in the country from Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, people aware of the development told ET. The meeting to be held by the department of pharmaceuticals (DoP) will discuss bringing surgical gloves and single-use medical examination gloves under the quality control order (QCO) to ensure better standards for these products whether imported or manufactured in the country, sources said. At present, these gloves are not regulated properly, resulting in import of substandard gloves rejected in other countries. Senior officials from the textiles department, the country's drug regulator, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and industry associations will attend the meeting. They will discuss issues of importers procuring substandard gloves at prices lower than the manufacturing cost of medical/surgical gloves and dumping of cheap rubber gloves from countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, sources cited above said.

Citroen bets on 'Basalt' to boost India play
Citroen, which has had limited success with the models launched in India so far, is hoping to turn around its fortunes in the country with the Basalt — a mid-size coupe SUV that would go on sale in the second half of this year. The latest offering from the Stellantis group firm captures the learnings it has had in a market it considers the toughest in the world, said Thierry Koskas, global brand CEO of Citroen. «If you succeed in India, it means you can succeed everywhere in the world,» Koskas told ET. «I have been visiting India for 20 years and I am impressed by the rise of customer expectation in terms of features. The expectations of the customer are even higher than what you can see, for example, in Europe,» he said.

PSBs plan to set up 'green cells' for climate funding
green cells' with dedicated employees for climate-specific initiatives. These measures are part of the Enhanced Access and Service Excellence (EASE) reform version 7.0, which was rolled out last week. A senior bank executive said that one of the major focus areas of PSBs in FY25 will be developing capabilities for raising green funds and increasing their green lending portfolios. «Banks will set up specialised cells that will also focus on physical and transition risk in the existing loan portfolio and new loan opportunities,» he said, adding that other responsibilities include assessment of the environmental, social and governance (ESG)-related risks of borrowers through data. According to a report by the Reserve Bank of India, the country's green financing requirement is estimated to be at least 2.5% of GDP annually until 2030. Earlier this year, the banking regulator came out with draft guidelines on the disclosure framework for climate-related financial risks in 2024. The draft also proposes a glide path for detailed disclosures by regulated entities (REs) in the areas of governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets.

PM Modi allowed Prajwal Revanna to flee, then cancelled all Karnataka meets as he was afraid: Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi on Thursday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'allowed' sex scandal accused, NDA Hassan candidate Prajwal Revanna, to flee the country and thereafter cancelled all meetings in Karnataka as he was 'afraid'. «In the history of the country, not a single prime minister had sought support from voters for a mass rapist… It is not sex scandal, but a mass rape case. Prajwal had raped 400 women and it is shameful that Modi campaigned for him in Hassan,» Gandhi claimed at a rally in Raichur.

Warner Bros. The top 3 Hollywood films for 2024 in India including Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune 2 are all from the WMD stable or are distributed by the company, said its top executive of the region. Together the trio have already grossed over Rs 175 crores in theatres in the country so far. These films made it to the top 10 films for the month of March, as per Ormax, a media consulting firm. Why India needs to give more power to its regulators
The way the pot can't call the kettle black, hardly any product seller or service provider can take the 'holier than thou' stance against others. The Supreme Court's rebuke to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) during the Patanjali misleading advertising case hearing, asking it to also put its house in order, given the complaints of unethical conduct by allopathic doctors, is an instance in point here. Lack of effective regulations and their poor implementation is one of the major reasons for consumers' disempowerment over the years. Regular instances of product contamination, deficiency in services and involuntary product recalls or bans ordered by other countries point to the lack of regulatory deterrence among Indian businesses.

Stage set for more reforms, growth
GST collections for 2023-24 underpin the economic momentum and create the groundwork for streamlining a vital piece of fiscal reform. GST is a work in progress with scope for rate rationalisation and extension of coverage. Progress on either front will yield non-linear growth in indirect tax collection.

Trudeau's remarks illustrated political space given in Canada to separatism, extremism: India
India on Thursday rejected fresh comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and said the remarks once again illustrated the political space given in Canada to separatism, extremism, and violence. Trudeau addressed a Khalsa Day event in Toronto on Sunday that was attended by some pro-Khalistan people. On the sidelines of the event, he told the media that the killing of Nijjar in British Columbia in June last year created «problem» and that he cannot ignore it, in an apparent reference to his earlier allegations of involvement of Indian agents in the assassination. «PM Trudeau has made such remarks earlier as well. His remarks illustrate once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism, and violence,» external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing.

OTC policy can boost drug access, market
regulatory regime, a government-appointed three-member panel is mulling the idea of making commonly used cough and cold medicines, antacids, and fever-reducing drugs available 'over the counter' (OTC) at general stores. Many countries, such as Britain, the US and Australia, have well-defined guidelines for their sale and regulation. In 2022, India allowed the sale of certain drugs without a prescription as part of a new OTC drug policy. Though the Drugs Technical Advisory Board, the top advisory board on drugs, approved the policy, it never saw the light of the day.

Ahead of elections, Biden calls India, China, Russia and Japan 'xenophobic'
Joe Biden has called two of his QUAD partners — India and Japan — and two of his adversaries — Russia and China — "xenophobic" nations, asserting that none of these countries, unlike the United States, welcome immigrants. «This election is about freedom, America and democracy. That's why I badly need you. You know, one of the reasons why our economy is growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants,» Biden told his supporters at a fundraiser here on Wednesday evening.

Naveen Patnaik will never accept Bharat Ratna for father in return for alliance: V K Pandian
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will never accept Bharat Ratna or any other award for his father Biju Patnaik in return for any election or political alliance with the BJP, his close associate and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader V K Pandian has said. The former IAS officer, who has worked in Odisha for over 25 years, including as private secretary to the chief minister, also hit out at the central ministers from the state for having never spoken about the highest civilian award for the 'Pride of Odisha' and inspiration for every Odiya, Biju Patnaik. «One of the biggest identities for Odisha is the courage and valour shown by Biju Babu. If you see two Odiyas in any part of the world if they speak about Odisha, they will end up speaking about Biju Babu,» Pandian told PTI in an interview here. «They will either have tears or they will have emotions. That is the connect Biju Patnaik has with the people of Odisha. He was a freedom fighter, he has done so much for the country and the state. He is the architect of modern Odisha,» he added.

Expect India to become 2nd largest market for Citroen after France in 5yrs: CEO Thierry Koskas
Citroen expects India to become its second biggest market after home country in the next five years, for which it will accelerate network expansion besides introducing new products, company global CEO Thierry Koskas said on Thursday. The company will be incorporating learnings from the past few years of its presence in India to attract more consumers besides looking to rope in a brand ambassador to push the brand's visibility in India. «India is an important market for Citroen and in a few years, it will become the second biggest market for us after our home market France,» Koskas told PTI here in an interview. At the moment, India is «probably in the top 10 markets for Citroen, more towards the 10th rather than upwards», he said, adding, «So, there is a lot of room for improvement, but I think it's absolutely possible.»
