How a narrower CAD helps stabilise the rupee
rupee was the most stable emerging market currency in the past year amid global economic uncertainty. What are the factors that contributed to its relative stability? It is largely the narrowing current account deficit (CAD), besides robust economic fundamentals. Atmadip Ray explains how CAD influences the rupee movement and what are the consequences of a high deficit ratio. What is CAD? A country's current account is a calculation of the total value of goods and services imported and exported. If the value of goods and services imported exceeds the value of goods and services exported, then the current account turns into deficit mode. It considers the sum of trade balance and net income of companies from abroad. The current account deficit or surplus is expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product.

Hawaii tourists need to pay climate tax? Here's what we know so far
climate tax targeting tourists who flock to the Aloha State. If approved, the tax revenue would go towards safeguarding beaches and mitigating the risk of wildfires, providing vital support for environmental conservation efforts across the state, as per a report. Hawaii's proposal to implement a tourist tax aligns with similar measures taken by other popular destinations worldwide. Countries such as Greece, Italy's Venice, the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, Palau, and New Zealand have all enacted similar fees aimed at tourists, with charges ranging from $1 to $100. This approach reflects a growing trend among tourist hotspots to address the environmental and infrastructural strains caused by large numbers of visitors, according to New York Post report.
