Why is the business of resort homes flourishing?
The concept of a ‘holiday’ in India is undergoing an alteration and has come to a stage of maturity. This has come about due to a number of factors which include a stressful work life and therefore a need for regular short breaks, rising income levels and higher aspirations for a better lifestyle etc. The holiday bug has caught the fancy of Indians in a big way, but with a difference. If we took a peek into the past, a few years ago investing in a holiday home was the privilege enjoyed by a few HNIs or NRIs. Since then, there has been a perceptible shift, post Covid 19, where we are seeing younger generation of Indians looking at purchasing property in holiday destinations across the country.

Does that mean Canada is doing well attracting capital, as the federal government has argued? Not really. Not if you consider outflows, too.

Today’s homebuyers should look to invest in property along the lines of metros and expressways in the city outskirts to access premium properties in an affordable manner. Considering the rapid expansion of cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, homebuyers and investors should make use of the early mover advantage to invest in properties before land rates spike, says Bhavesh Kothari, Founder & CEO, Property First.

US falling behind peers on CBDC progress, warns think tank
China has ramped up its digital yuan work over the last year, while the ECB is now in the preparation phase for a digital euro and India is seeing a million transactions per day processed by commercial banks throughout the country for the digital rupee. Yet in the US, the Federal Reserve has been cautious about pushing ahead with pilots and several governors have expressed scepticism about the need for a CBDC. This month, Donald Trump vowed to prevent the creation of a digital dollar if he wins the US presidential election, calling a CBDC a "dangerous threat to freedom". Josh Lipsky and Ananya Kumar from the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Centre warn that technological payments innovation at the Fed is lagging behind its peers and competitors.

Mint Explainer: Why an election upset in Pakistan could mean for India
Pakistan’s general election has taken an unexpected twist. Early trends indicate that Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) might have stolen a march on its political rivals in the polls, even with its leader, the flamboyant former World Cup-winning cricket captain, behind bars on various corruption charges. A PTI win would also present a setback to the country’s powerful military.

How have Indians at large fared under this government?
A significantly large part of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s interim budget speech last week was devoted to outlining the performance of the incumbent government. With general elections only months away, this was expected. And like a political speech, her delivery on 1 February highlighted an increase in the per capita income of Indians by more than 50% over the last decade, along with the government’s claim of about 250 million Indians having moved out of multidimensional poverty during the same period.

MSME and gender issues must be kept apart from WTO rules
The 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) at Abu Dhabi, scheduled for 26-29 February, will discuss, among other issues, how the WTO can become more relevant for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and businesses run by women. Informal working groups on both MSMEs and gender were launched at the 11th ministerial in 2017. Since then, each group has come up with reports and is working towards more concrete outcomes.
