At BRICS meet, Saudi Arabia urges all nations to halt weapon exports to Israel
Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday urged all nations to cease weapon exports to Israel, according to Al Arabiya Post. Saudi Arabia's Crown Price made this request during an extraordinary BRICS Joint Meeting, which was being held virtually to address the Israel-Hamas conflict. South Africa is hosting the BRICS groups of nations to convene the virtual BRICS Extraordinary Joint Meeting. Saudi Arabia further demanded the start of a serious and comprehensive peace process to establish a Palestinian state along the borders of 1967, reported Al Arabiya Post. «The Kingdom's position is constant and firm; there is no way to achieve security and stability in Palestine except through the implementation of international decisions related to the two-state solution,» he stressed. The Saudi Crown Prince restated the country's rejection of Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip and demanded an immediate halt to them. Additionally, he said that the «brutal crimes» unfolding in Gaza demand a collective effort to bring them to an end, Al Arabiya Post reported. At the meeting, the Crown Prince reiterated Saudi Arabia's rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and called for collective efforts to stop the deterioration of the humanitarian conditions in the enclave. Since the beginning of the war, Saudi Arabia has made tireless efforts to protect civilians in the Gaza Strip, he added. The BRICS extraordinary meeting was hosted by the BRICS chair South Africa who accused Israel of war crimes and «genocide» in the Palestinian territory.

Argentine markets react with optimism to Milei election
stock market reacted with optimism Tuesday to the resounding election win by libertarian Javier Milei, despite the country being gripped by uncertainty over what changes the self-described «anarcho-capitalist» will bring. Milei, a 53-year-old economist who has vowed to scrap multiple government departments and sometimes campaigned by waving a chainsaw from the stage, trounced Argentina's long-dominant Peronist coalition as voters punished the government for decades of economic decline. Latin America's third-biggest economy is creaking under annual inflation of 143 percent. Monday, the day after the election, was a public holiday in Argentina, delaying the market reaction.

China is expanding its crackdown on mosques to regions outside Xinjiang, Human Rights Watch says
Chinese government has expanded its campaign of closing mosques to regions other than Xinjiang, where for years it has been blamed for persecuting Muslim minorities, according to a Human Rights Watch report released Wednesday. Authorities have closed mosques in the northern Ningxia region as well as Gansu province, which are home to large populations of Hui Muslims, as part of a process known officially as «consolidation,» according to the report, which draws on public documents, satellite images and witness testimonies. Local authorities also have been removing architectural features of mosques to make them look more «Chinese,» part of a campaign by the ruling Communist Party to tighten control over religion and reduce the risk of possible challenges to its rule. President Xi Jinping in 2016 called for the «Sinicization» of religions, initiating a crackdown that has largely concentrated on the western region of Xinjiang, home to more than 11 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities. A United Nations report last year found China may have committed «crimes against humanity» in Xinjiang, including through its construction of a network of extrajudicial internment camps believed to have held at least 1 million Uyghurs, Huis, Kazakhs and Kyrgyz. Chinese authorities have decommissioned, closed down, demolished or converted mosques for secular use in regions outside Xinjiang as part of a campaign aimed at cracking down on religious expression, according to Human Rights Watch. The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not immediately answer faxed questions seeking comment on the report and its official policies toward Muslim minorities. One of the first known references to «mosque consolidation» appears in an internal party

Public digital infrastructure must bridge every digital divide
Among the concerns often raised in connection with the proliferation of digital public infrastructure (DPI) is the worry that nations that are reliant on digital systems for the delivery of public services will end up excluding those incapable of accessing these digital solutions from the benefits these systems were built to offer. As digitization efforts accelerate across the globe, the schism between those who can access these systems and those who cannot is only going to get more acute. Most people associate digital capacity with connectivity.
