The Gaza war has deepened Joe Biden’s Iran nightmare
step back from immediate escalation. Yet amid the bloody struggle in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, a broader and potentially more dangerous rivalry with Iran is growing. Having abandoned the Trump-era approach of “maximum pressure" on Iran, in recent months the Biden administration had sought quietly to reduce tensions.

American Tower Corp books $322 mn goodwill impairment charge for India unit
American Tower Corp (ATC) has informed the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it has taken a $322 million (Rs 2,677 crore approx) goodwill impairment charge for its India unit in the quarter ended September 2023, amid continuing business challenges in the country. This is since the fair value of ATC’s India unit has dropped below its carrying amount in the September quarter, the Boston-based telecom tower company said in a recent global SEC filing. “The company (read: ATC) performed an interim quantitative goodwill impairment test as of September 30, 2023, using information obtained from third parties to compare the fair value of the India reporting unit to its carrying amount, including goodwill. The result indicated that the carrying amount of the company's India reporting unit exceeded its estimated fair value… as a result, the company recorded a goodwill impairment charge of $322 million for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2023,” ATC said in its US SEC filing, dated October 26. The US tower firm added that it continues to evaluate the carrying value of its Indian assets, which may result in realisation of additional impairment expenses or other similar charges. The fair value, typically, is the estimated price at which an asset is bought or sold when buyer and seller agree on a price.

Israel intensifies Gaza strikes despite ceasefire calls
Israel on Monday pounded Gaza with «significant» strikes as soldiers battled Hamas forces in the besieged territory, ignoring ceasefire calls by UN aid agencies who condemned surging civilian deaths in the month-long conflict. Israeli troops and Hamas fighters engaged in house-to-house combat in densely populated Gaza, where the war has sent 1.5 million people fleeing to other parts of the territory in a desperate search for cover. «We will take the fight to Hamas wherever they are, underground, above ground», Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said at a briefing Monday, repeating calls for civilians to leave the urban war zone in the north of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. «We will be able to dismantle Hamas, stronghold after stronghold, battalion after battalion, until we achieve the ultimate goal, which is to rid the Gaza Strip — the entire Gaza Strip — of Hamas.» Conricus again accused Hamas of building tunnels underneath hospitals, schools and places of worship in Gaza to hide fighters, plan attacks and store ammunition — a charge the militant group has repeatedly denied. «This strike is like an earthquake,» Gaza City resident Alaa Abu Hasera said, in a devastated area where entire blocks were reduced to rubble. Israel launched a massive bombing campaign after the Palestinian militants staged the worst attack in the country's history. In their October 7 attack, Hamas gunmen killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and took more than 240 others hostage. The health ministry in Gaza, which is run by Hamas, says more than 9,770 people, many of them women and children, have been killed in Israeli strikes and the intensifying ground campaign since the war began. Israel has resisted calls for a halt in

China Tries to Lure Its Unemployed Youth to the Countryside
ZHAOQING, China—During the Cultural Revolution, a teenage Xi Jinping was sent down to the countryside, where he spent years in the late 1960s and early ’70s toiling on farms and reading books in a cave. Half a century later, China’s leader wants more young people to follow his lead. With youth unemployment recently hitting record levels—and deepening concern in Beijing about the hollowing out of rural China—Xi is calling on students and college graduates to embrace hardship and consider giving up city life for the countryside.

All easy returns are gone. From here, replicate the economy: Anurag Singh
Anurag Singh, Managing Partner, Ansid Capital, “we are very cautious on emerging markets. India is an exception, we will talk about it but outside India, for the rest of the emerging markets, look at the MSCI 10 year returns. They have been sub 3%. China, Brazil, Argentina, South Korea have produced some phenomenal companies, but market wise they have not produced great returns.” Singh also says: “China in a big way benefited out of an export-led economy. Now exports and trade as a percentage of global GDP is dropping. It peaked out about 8 to 10 years back and now it is the time where India empowers the domestic economy and looks at the domestic facing sectors.” Friday's rally is triggered by what is happening in the world. Are you comfortable with yields coming down all of that or are you still cautious? It is good to be back in India right now. I will continue to be cautious right now. We will discuss those four or five macro trends that I am going to pull out. We would observe that there is going to be a constant pressure on the 10-year yield of the US.

New patterns coming up in India and we have to predict those to make money: Pashupati Advani
Pashupati Advani, Founder & Chairman, Global Foray, says “I unfortunately bailed out of Paytm a little early, so I am kind of watching it go up and missing it. Zomato is okay and with the World Cup, definitely the numbers have been good and the stickiness is also going to be there. So it is the way India is moving and it is new patterns that are coming up and we actually have to predict those to make money.” How is your portfolio shaping up? What have you been busy analysing and adding in your portfolios? I am a little bit reluctant to add aggressively simply because we are not at highs. But there is a lot of turmoil. I find it very difficult to believe that even though people are slaughtering each other in Israel and Gaza and in Ukraine and Russia, markets continue to trade up sort of quite interestingly. But there obviously seems to be money around. But I am a little surprised at where things are going. I have actually not been so aggressive.
