No significant boost from DNC: Harris is ahead of Trump by only 4 points in U.S. Polls
According to a recent ABC News/Ipsos survey, which was released on Sunday, Harris led Trump among all adults and registered voters 50 per cent to 46 per cent. Harris had a 52 per cent to 46 per cent advantage over Trump among likely voters. The results are comparable and statistically unchanged from an August poll, according to pollsters. Before the convention, an ABC News, Washington Post, and Ipsos poll found that among registered voters, Harris had 49% support and Trump had 45%. Everybody's eyes were on the polls that were made public after the Democratic National Convention last month to see if the vice president would gain ground after the convention, as some candidates have in the past. Starting on August 23, the day following the convention's last night, a poll was conducted. Pollsters noted that Harris widened the gender gap, even though most of the numbers were essentially unchanged from before the Democratic convention. Regarding women, Harris had a 13-point advantage (54% versus 41%), while Trump had a 5-point advantage (51% versus 46%). According to pollsters, Harris had a 6-point advantage over women before the convention.

SC directs Sahara group to submit property sale plan for investor refund by Thursday
Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Sahara group to submit a “scheme” for the sale of its immovable, domestic and offshore properties by Thursday. This is to raise money for refund of more than Rs 24,029 crore collected by its two entities — Sahara India Real Estate Corporation Ltd (SIRECL) and Sahara Housing Investment Corporation Ltd (SHICL) — from 3.3 crore bond investors, with an interest of 15% from March 2008, as directed by the apex court in a series of orders since August 2012. A bench comprising Justices Sanjeev Khanna, Bela Trivedi and MM Sundresh told Sahara’s senior advocate Kapil Sibal that “more than 10 years have passed, and you still haven't deposited the money… SEBI is seeking the remaining Rs 10,000 crore. How will you muster the remaining Rs 10,000 crore?” Sibal said that Sahara group did not have a fair opportunity to sell its properties to pay the balance amount and no one wanted to “touch its properties.”

Kolkata doctor's rape and murder case: Court sends ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, 3 others to 8-day police custody
Sandip Ghosh was remanded in eight-day police custody by Alipore Judges Court on Tuesday. This followed his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of financial misconduct. Three others were also detained alongside Ghosh, including his security guard and two vendors who supplied materials to the hospital. The arrest is connected to the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body of a female medic, a victim of rape and murder, was discovered on August 9. The CBI's investigation stems from the Calcutta High Court's August 23 order, transferring the case from a state-formed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the federal agency. Ghosh was the second person arrested in connection with this case, following the earlier detention of a civic volunteer by the Kolkata Police. The opposition BJP asserted that this development exposed efforts by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government to cover up the former principal's wrongdoings. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh acknowledged that the state health department could have acted sooner to avoid the current situation.

Coco Gauff loses at the U.S. Open to Emma Navarro, ending her title defense with 19 double-faults
Coco Gauff's 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss to Emma Navarro in the U.S. Open's fourth round: Gauff wound up with more double-faults, 19, than winners, 14. It was the latest in a series of early-for-her exits in recent weeks, including bowing out in the third round at the Paris Olympics, then going 1-2 at hard-court tuneup events before arriving in New York. «I feel like there's 70 other players in the draw that would love to have the summer that I had, even though it's (the) least, probably, (I've) done well during this time of the year,» said the No. 3-seeded Gauff, who went 18-1 during the North American swing on hard courts 12 months ago, including the run to her first Grand Slam title. «So many people want to be in the fourth round. So many people want to make the Olympics. So many people want to be flag bearer. It's perspective.» The 20-year-old from Florida did fight her way back into the match with a four-game run in which she claimed 14 of 17 points and grabbed the second set.

Delhi High Court quashes final tax assessments for MNCs, citing violations of Income Tax Act procedures
MNCs, including Microsoft India, Sumitomo Corporation India and AT Kearney India, the Delhi High Court on Monday quashed the final tax assessment orders that were passed against them without there being any draft assessment orders as mandated under Section 144C of the Income Tax Act 1961. It further said that the final assessment orders if framed after the prescribed time under Section 153 of the Act had expired are liable to be quashed on that ground additionally. Failure to frame a draft assessment order by the assessing officer would “clearly be violative of the mandatory prescriptions of Section 144C and the final order of assessment framed in violation thereof is liable to be viewed as a nullity,” a Division Bench comprising justices Yashwant Varma and Ravinder Dudeja said.

Power to arrest must be directly proportional to its checks and balances: Delhi court to ED
bail to an accused in a money laundering case and said that the power to arrest must be directly proportional to its checks and balances coupled with unambiguous regulations. Granting bail to Mangelal Sunil Agarwal, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Dheeraj Mor noted that in a «very unpleasant situation», while the previous investigating officer had cited him as a witness, the next IO chose to arrest him based on the same evidence available on record. «The hallmark of investigation is its objectivity. Subjective interpretation of IO must be deprecated as it would make a supposed objective investigation dependent upon his uncontrolled whims and fancies, who has been conferred extreme power of arrest that leads to curtailing liberty of an individual,» the judge said in the order passed on August 31. «In these circumstances, it is apparent that one of the lOs was/is wrong and either acted upon the considerations extraneous to law for the reasons to be ascertained or he was incompetent to comprehend the facts of the case in proper perspective.
