Why Brazil’s Supreme Court blocked X and what it means for the platform
Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered the suspension of X, formerly known as Twitter, after a protracted legal battle with the social media platform's owner, Elon Musk. The Court mandated this suspension due to the company's failure to appoint a new legal representative in Brazil within the deadline set by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. The decision affects approximately 40 million Brazilian users who will lose access to the platform within 24 hours, making it the latest addition to the list of countries that have banned or suspended the social media service. The legal confrontation between X and Brazilian authorities began in April when Judge de Moraes ordered the suspension of multiple X accounts accused of spreading disinformation, a directive with which the company did not comply. This defiance led to the current suspension order. The judge also imposed a fine of 50,000 reais (Rs. 7.47 lakh) for any attempts to circumvent the block, such as using a VPN. In response to the decision, Elon Musk stated, «Free speech is the bedrock of democracy, and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes.»

Petition lacks merit: Delhi HC dismisses plea challenging election of Nitish Kumar as JDU President
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as President of the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)). The court found no substantial reason to interfere with the election results and deemed the petition to be without merit. This decision upholds Nitish Kumar's position as the party president. The bench of Justice Pushpender Kumar Kaurav in an order passed on August 29, noted that the reliefs sought by the petitioner, fall wholly outside the ambit of the inquiry contemplated under Section 29A of the RP Act. As elucidated in the preceding discussion, the principles established in the case of Sadiq Ali (supra) do not support the reliefs sought in this writ petition.

Novak Djokovic's US Open defeat sparks questions over legend's future
Novak Djokovic slumped to his earliest exit at the US Open in 18 years on Friday as a four-set, third round defeat to Alexei Popyrin sparked more questions over his long term future in the sport. The 37-year-old Djokovic, a four-time champion in New York, lost 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to the 28th-ranked Australian, leaving him frustratingly short once again of winning a record 25th Grand Slam title. His defeat, which saw him hit an uncharacteristic 14 double faults and commit 49 unforced errors, means that for the first time since 2017 he will end the season without a Grand Slam title.

Brazil watchdog moves to block access to Elon Musk's X after court order
Brazil's telecommunications regulator said on Friday it was proceeding to suspend access to Elon Musk's X social network in the country in compliance with an order from a judge who has been locked in a months-long feud with the billionaire investor. The move followed the expiry of a court-imposed deadline for the popular social media platform to name a legal representative in Brazil. Musk has argued that Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes is trying to enforce unjustified censorship, while the judge has insisted that social media needs hate speech regulations.

Your letter 'factually incorrect' to 'cover up delays' in setting up of FTSCs for rape cases: Center to Mamata Banjeree
Mamata Banerjee's leter on August 29 is factually incorrect and is a step to cover up delays in setting up fast track special courts for rape cases. In a letter dated August 30, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, said that West Bengal has established 88 Fast Track Courts (FTCs), which are not the same as the Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) covered under the Central Government Scheme. «The FTCs are set up and funded by the State Governments in consultation with the concerned High Courts to handle a broad spectrum of cases such as civil cases involving senior citizens, women, children, disabled persons, litigants affected by HIV-AIDS and other terminal illnesses; and civil disputes related to land acquisition and property/ rent disputes pending for over five years including cases of heinous crimes. In the FTCs in West Bengal, a total of 81,141 cases were pending as on 30.06.2024. On the other hand, Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) are specifically dedicated to deal with Rape and POCSO Act cases. lnspite of pendency of 48,600 rape and POCSO cases in West Bengal, the State has not operationalized additional 11 FTSCs which may be exclusive POCSO Courts or combined FTSCs dealing with both Rape and POCSO cases, as per the State's requirement,» she added.

Will Trump challenge U.S election results if he loses? Things may be difficult this time
Donald Trump, would not accept the outcome if he is defeated in the 2024 election. He's been outspoken about the Democrats' decision to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris, referring to it as a «coup» and suggesting that the results are already predetermined. Though rare, Trump and his allies still insist that voting by non-citizens is commonplace. In addition, he said that he would only accept the election results if he thought that «everything's honest,» implying that he was prepared to contest the results if he had second thoughts, as per the reports of MSN. It's possible that the winner of the Trump-Harris race won't be clear by November 6, the day after the election. Issues may also arise during the weeks before Congress counts the Electoral College votes on January 6. Trump's campaign co-manager hinted at a possible legal and political battle following the election, emphasizing that the outcome isn't final until the inauguration. The close race increases uncertainty on Election Day and beyond, with states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin lacking laws to process mail-in ballots quickly, potentially leading to a scenario where Trump appears ahead on election night, only to see his lead diminish as more votes are counted. UCC must for gender parity, says VP Jagdeep Dhankhar
Narendra Modi espousing a secular civil code for the nation during his Independence Day speech, vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday stressed on the need for a uniform civil code (UCC), saying it is a «constitutional ordainment» as it is mentioned in the Directive Principles. UCC will be a big contributor to the cause of gender justice, he said. «Uniform civil code is a constitutional ordainment. It is in Directive Principles (of State Policy). The Supreme Court has severely that it is being delayed but UCC, which has been on the shelf for too long, is a small measure of justice to your (women) segment… It will help in several ways but majorly it will help your gender,» Dhankhar said while addressing students of Bharati College, a women's college affiliated to the University of Delhi. Article 44 of the Constitution, under the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP), suggests that there should be a UCC in the country. However, provisions listed under DPSP are not binding on the government and hence not justiciable.

Trump promises universal coverage for IVF, suggests he'll vote against Florida abortion measure
Donald Trump says that, if he wins a second term, he wants to make IVF treatment free for women, but did not detail how he would fund his plan or precisely how it would work. «I'm announcing today in a major statement that under the Trump administration, your government will pay for — or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for — all costs associated with IVF treatment,» he said at an event in Michigan. «Because we want more babies, to put it nicely.» IVF treatments are notoriously expensive, and can cost tens of thousands of dollars for a single round. Many women require multiple rounds and there is no guarantee of success.
