SC rejects Maha govt's plea for stay of acquittal of ex-DU prof G N Saibaba in Maoist links case
Supreme Court on Monday rejected a Maharashtra government application seeking a stay on the acquittal of former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba and others in the Maoist links case, and said the Bombay High Court order clearing them of the charges is «prima facie well-reasoned». A bench of justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta, however, admitted the state government's appeal against the March 5 order of the high court. The bench also rejected the oral request of Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the Maharashtra government, for early listing of the appeal and said it will come up for hearing in due course of time. «There cannot be any urgency to reverse order acquittal. Had it been the other way around, we would have considered,» the bench told Raju and asked him to file for expeditious hearing at a later stage.

Election Commissioner Arun Goel's sudden resignation has led to a crisis: Karti Chidambaram
Election Commissioner Arun Goel has led to a Constitutional crisis and yet the central government has not given any explanation on the matter, Congress leader Karti Chidambaram said on Monday. Speaking to reporters, Karti pointed that no press conference was held and neither was any reason disclosed about the resignation of a person who held a constitutional post. «In a mature democracy, if a senior constitutional functionary resigns, there will be a press conference or there will be a statement, at the least to disclose the reason behind the resignation. His sudden resignation has led to a constitutional crisis and the government has not given any explanation on it,» he remarked.

'Acquitting GN Saibaba in Maoist link case is well reasoned,' says Supreme Court
GN Saibaba released from Nagpur Central Jail after acquittal: Who is he? Saibaba was lodged in the jail here since 2017 after his conviction by a trial court in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district. Before that, he was in prison from 2014 to 2016 and was subsequently granted bail. The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Tuesday set aside the life sentence of Saibaba in the alleged Maoist links case, noting that the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

Electoral Bonds Case: Congress hails SC order on SBI extension plea, says court protected Indian democracy
Congress party leader KC Venugopal on Monday lauded the Supreme Court's order dismissing SBI's plea seeking extension till June 30, 2024, to furnish details regarding electoral bonds. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, «The Supreme Court has once again come to protect Indian democracy from the devious machinations of this regime. It was laughable for the SBI to seek an extension on a simple 1 day job. The fact is that the government is scared of all their skeletons tumbling out of the closet. This mega corruption scandal, as certified by the Supreme Court, will expose the unholy nexus between the BJP and its corrupt corporate masters.» The post was also shared by senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

Federal judge in Texas blocks US labor board rule that would make it easier for workers to unionize
new rule by the National Labor Relations Board that would have made it easier for millions of workers to form unions at big companies. The rule, which was due to go into effect Monday, would have set new standards for determining when two companies should be considered “joint employers" in labor negotiations. Under the current NLRB rule, which was passed by a Republican-dominated board in 2020, a company like McDonald’s isn’t considered a joint employer of most of its workers since they are directly employed by franchisees.

Arun Goel's resignation: Issues with CEC simmered; escalated over past few days
Arun Goel's resignation as election commissioner, although a surprise, was preceded by simmering differences with chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar. The issues appeared to have escalated over the last few weeks following Anup Pandey's retirement on February 15. ET has learnt that most disagreements were not about major policy issues. However, differences continued and involved issues such as the composition and size of EC teams heading to states for poll preparation reviews and the formats of press briefings in states, among others. Insiders said that despite such disagreements, there was no recorded case of 'dissent' between the duo at Nirvachan Sadan. The differences were rather «expressed verbally».
