Delhi HC to hear on Monday wrestlers' plea against WFI elections
Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and her husband Satyawart Kadian seeking to set aside and declare as illegal the elections held by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The petition by the wrestlers, who were at the forefront of last year's protest at Jantar Mantar here demanding the arrest of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for the alleged sexual harassment of seven women grapplers, is listed for hearing before Justice Sachin Datta. The plea contended that the WFI elections, held on December 21, were in blatant violation of Sports Code and sought a direction to the federation to «cease and desist» from undertaking any activity pertaining to the sport of wrestling. «The present Writ Petition is being filed by the Petitioners inter alia assailing, challenging, and seeking directions against the illegal action of the suspended Wrestling Federation of India conducting selection trials for the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 and Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Wrestling Tournament notified through its circular Dt. 26.02.2024 against the directives of the Ad-Hoc Committee for Wrestling Federation of India,» the petition said.

PM Narendra Modi urges 'everyone' to donate to BJP after giving Rs 2,000
Narendra Modi today urged 'everyone' to donate money to the Bharatiya Janata Party to boost nation building by monetarily helping the efforts of the saffron party, which meanwhile is gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections. The call to donate money to BJP comes weeks after the Supreme Court banned electoral bond, which was introduced by the Modi government, and helped political parties raise money. These bonds, which allowed for anonymous donations, had become a key component of political funding, with some regional parties relying heavily on them for financial support. For the BJP, electoral bonds constitute more than half of its overall income, indicating their crucial role in sustaining political campaigns. The prime minister donated 2,000 rupees to the BJP party fund.

Lawyers in Elon Musk pay case want a $6 billion fee
Elon Musk's $56 billion compensation as excessive are seeking a record legal fee worth $6 billion, payable in the electric car maker's stock, according to a Friday court filing. «We recognise that the requested fee is unprecedented in terms of absolute size,» said the filing with the Court of Chancery in Delaware by the three law firms. The fee works out to an hourly rate of $288,888, according to the court filing. The fee will be paid by Tesla to attorneys who represented Richard Tornetta, a Tesla shareholder who sued Musk in 2018 over the pay package, which a Delaware judge nixed in January. The electric vehicle maker is being asked to pay the fee because it benefited from the return of Musk's pay package, which the legal team said will result in the return to the carmaker of 266 million shares.

Google on Friday removed several popular apps by ten Indian developers from its Play Store, citing non-compliance with billing policies. This move has sparked a contentious dispute between the tech giant and Indian developers over what they perceive as Google’s «unfair» policies. But less than a day later, it started reinstating some of the apps on the Play Store, which began complying with its billing norms. Which apps have been impacted? Among the delisted apps were Bharat Matrimony, Telugu Matrimony, Tamil Matrimony, Marathi Matrimony, Matrimony.com’s Jodii and People Group’s Shaadi.com, along with dating apps Truly Madly and QuackQuack.

Article 21 soul of Constitution, liberty of citizen paramount, says SC
Supreme Court has said that Article 21 is the soul of the Constitution as the liberty of a citizen is of paramount importance and the high court not expeditiously adjudicating matters related to it would deprive a person of this precious right. A bench of Justice B R Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta made the observation after noting that the Bombay High Court has granted bail to one Amol Vithal Vahile, a prime accused in the murder of a corporator in Maharashtra, after a nudge from the apex court on January 29. The bench, in its recent order, said it is thus clear that before the order was passed by this court on January 29, 2024, the high court instead of deciding the application for bail on merits shunted it on one or the other ground. «Needless to state that Article 21 of the Constitution of India is the soul of the Constitution as the liberty of a citizen is of paramount importance. Not deciding the matter pertaining to liberty of a citizen expeditiously and shunting away the matter on one or the other ground would deprive the party of their precious right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India,» it said.

Mirwaiz stopped again from addressing Friday congregation, hopeful of justice from court: Auqaf
Mirwaiz Umer Farooq from addressing the congregation at historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar and didn’t allow him to leave his residence. The Anjuman Auqaf which runs the affairs of Jama Masjid termed it as an ‘unjustified move’ and ‘a restriction on the fundamental rights’ of Mirwaiz. They alleged that the authorities had informed them on Thursday that Mirwaiz would be allowed to come to Jama for the Friday prayers and sermon. “On Friday morning they reneged on their promise and again put him under house detention and regretfully once again Mirwaiz was prohibited from offering mandatory Friday prayers and delivering his sermons,” read the statement of Auqaf. They further said that Mirwaiz is being unjustly prevented from carrying out his religious duties at the Jama Masjid, which is a place of significant spiritual importance to the muslims. “This restriction not only impedes on his fundamental rights but also on the rights of the community members who benefit from his teachings. “Repeated appeals to authorities for his release from all quarters are falling on deaf ears,” Anjuman said.
