Supreme Court warns ED for the manner which PLMA is being implemented
Supreme Court on Monday criticised the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and expressed concern over the way in which PMLA was being implemented. It also made it clear that any high-handedness against any accused in violation of their fundamental rights would not be allowed, reported TOI. “ED officers should remember that there is something called Article 21 in the country (which guarantees right to life and liberty),” the Supreme Court said. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih took exception to the way in which former IAS officer Anil Tuteja was issued summons and arrested in a hurry. It sought an explanation from ED.

Tritax EuroBox adjourns meetings to approve SEGRO deal after Brookfield recommendation
In a stock exchange notice published on Friday (18 October), the EBOX board said Brookfield's offer represents «an attractive premium over the earlier all-share offer by SEGRO», which the directors originally backed in early September. The cash deal for Tritax Eurobox with Brookfield's real estate private funds put forward on 10 October values each EBOX share at 69p, while SEGRO's all-share offer had valued it at about 68.4p a share. The directors have withdrawn their support for the SEGRO offer and adjourned the court and general meetings due to be held on Thursday (24 October) to a...

How Indonesia's transformative leader tarnished his legacy
The threat, as they saw it, was from their elected leader, President Joko Widodo. In his two terms in office, Joko, who stepped down Sunday, transformed Indonesia, virtually eradicating extreme poverty in the sprawling archipelago, where about 280 million people live. But many believe he also tried to bend the laws to install a political dynasty, undercutting the very democracy that let him become the country's first president who was not from the military or the long-established political elite.

Sakshi Malik says Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia's Asian Games 2023 exemption decision hurt protest
Sakshi Malik expressed that Indian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia's choice to accept exemptions from the Asian Games trials last year negatively impacted the image of their protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She further explained in the book that the move by the two wrestlers made the protest appear «selfish.» Malik criticised the decision to accept the exemption, stating it damaged the protest's reputation and led supporters to question the sincerity of their movement. The protest concluded after police halted their march toward the new Parliament Building on May 28, 2023. In her book, Witness, co-authored with journalist Jonathan Selvaraj, Malik noted that the protest began to falter as «greed» influenced those close to Punia and Phogat.

Karnataka HC rejects PIL seeking apology from Rahul Gandhi over alleged remarks on women
Rahul Gandhi apologise for allegedly tarnishing the dignity of Indian women. The PIL stemmed from a claim that Gandhi had falsely accused former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of rape and sexual abuse, of «raping 400 women and filming the act,» describing it as «mass rape» and not a sex scandal. A bench comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice K Aravind dismissed the petition, stating that it was a waste of judicial time. The Court also imposed a Rs 25,000 fine on the petitioner, the All India Dalit Action Committee, for filing the plea. The petitioner's counsel argued that Gandhi's remarks, made during a public speech, were highly irresponsible and offensive, particularly to the women of Hassan. He pleaded the Court to issue a notice to Gandhi, compelling him to respond to the allegations.

Remarks on PM's degree: SC upholds summons against Arvind Kejriwal in Gujarat
Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea filed by former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal challenging an order of the Gujarat High Court refusing to quash summons in a defamation case over his alleged remarks over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational qualification. A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S V N Bhatti noted that a separate bench of the apex court had junked the plea filed by AAP leader Sanjay Singh on April 8 in the same case. «We must have a consistent approach,» said the bench. The Gujarat High Court had on February 16 dismissed the pleas of Singh and Kejriwal seeking quashing of the summons issued against them in the case.

Had CJI prayed for other issues...: Congress' Udit Raj slams Chandrachud for 'prayed for Ayodhya dispute' remarks
Babri Masjid land dispute. Raj stated that if the Chief Justice had prayed for resolving other pressing concerns, such as ordinary citizens getting justice without financial burdens or the misuse of agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Income Tax Department (IT), these issues might have also been addressed. This comes after CJI Chandrachud on Saturday had said that he sat before God (in his home) and asked him to find a solution to the vexed Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid dispute when the case came up before a bench led by Justice Ranjan Gogoi in which Chandrachud was one of the justices.

Republicans and Democrats are both preparing for long legal battles over the 2024 election results
Donald Trump, who still refuses to accept that he lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, says he wants a presidential victory Nov. 5 to be so overwhelming that the results are «too big to rig.» «We want a landslide,» he recently told supporters in Georgia. «We can't let anything happen.» No matter the margins, Republicans and Democrats are preparing for a potentially lengthy battle over the results once they come in. Dozens of lawsuits that could set the stage for challenges after the votes are counted are already playing out in courts across the country. Most have been filed by Republicans and their allies. Many of the cases involve challenges to mail-in balloting, ballots from overseas voters and claims of voting by people who are not U.S citizens.
