Brazil reaches $23 billion settlement with mining firms over 2015 environmental disaster
Brazil's federal government on Friday reached a multibillion-dollar settlement with the mining companies responsible for a 2015 dam collapse that the government said was the country's worst-ever environmental disaster. Under the agreement, Samarco — a joint venture of Brazilian mining giant Vale and Anglo-Australian firm BHP — will pay 132 billion reais ($23 billion) over 20 years. The payments are meant to compensate for human, environmental and infrastructure damage caused by the release of an immense amount of toxic mining waste into a major river in southeastern Minas Gerais state, killing 19 people and ravaging entire villages. «We are fixing a disaster that could have been avoided, but wasn't,» President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a hall of the presidential palace, surrounded by governors of the affected states, members of his administration, reporters and victims.

After the DoJ indictment of an Indian national, the foreign ministry, however, announced the setting up of a committee to probe the allegations.

India's participation at Worlds cleared, govt to take responsibility if WFI charged with contempt
Indian wrestling team's participation at the World Championships after all the 12 selected athletes assembled outside the residence of Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and sought his intervention, a day after the WFI withdrew the nation's entries from the prestigious tournament. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) was on Thursday forced to pull all three Indian teams out of the championships after wrestler Satyawart Kadian, husband of Sakshi Malik, approached the court against the federation's decision to conduct trials for the U23 and senior Worlds. Kadian contended that sice WFI is suspended, it was committing a contempt of court by taking decisions. The WFI remains suspended by the ministry and the IOA has refused to re-introduce the ad-hoc panel, leaving the sport and the future of the wrestlers in limbo. The world governing body UWW has, though, lifted suspension of the WFI in February this year.

SC highlights misuse of dowry laws, acquits man in dowry death case
Supreme Court expressed concern over the misuse of dowry harassment provisions, noting that various relatives of the husband are often implicated alongside the main accused, reported TOI. The court stated that «exaggerated versions» are prevalent in many complaints and urged courts to exercise caution in these cases to protect the innocent from unnecessary suffering. Acquitting a man in a dowry death case, Justices C.T. Ravikumar and Sanjay Kumar highlighted that he married the deceased's sister-in-law after the initial dowry harassment allegations arose, and emphasised that he could not be convicted simply because his wife was found guilty. According to the TOI report, the apex court and various high courts have previously flagged the issue of misuse of these provisions. They emphasised that general and vague allegations should not serve as grounds for prosecution, advising courts to approach such complaints with caution.
