Dutch museum returns 2,000-yr-old Scythian artefacts to Ukraine after 9 year legal battle
Kyiv Monday after being stuck in a Dutch museum for nine years, where they were on show when Russia seized the Black Sea peninsula in 2014. Ukraine hailed the arrival of the jewels in the midst of the Russian full-scale 2022 invasion as a victory for its «identity and freedom». The Scythian artefacts — some around 2,000 years old — were on loan to Amsterdam's Allard Pierson museum when they suddenly were at the centre of a geopolitical crisis following Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. Years of legal battles ensued, with both Kyiv and Moscow-controlled Crimean museums filing suits that the jewels should be in their hands, before the Dutch Supreme Court ruled this summer they should go to Ukraine. «After almost 10 years of trials, artefacts from four museums of Crimea… returned to Ukraine,» the National Museum of the History of Ukraine (NMHU) said on its website. «They will be kept in the NMHU until the de-occupation of Crimea,» it added. Their return comes 21 months into Moscow's offensive, and is a symbolic win for Ukraine, which has repeatedly vowed to retake Crimea.

Dark patterns: Guidelines to prescribe penalties for erring digital businesses
The government is set to specify penalties for e-commerce companies misleading consumers into taking unintended decisions, as it tightens regulations on unfair trade practices by digital businesses. The guidelines for what’s known in the industry as dark patterns, or deceptive patterns, are expected in a matter of weeks, said an official informed about the development. The government decided to specify the penalties because the underlying consumer protection law does not specifically name ‘dark patterns’ as an unfair practice, although it has a broad scope and covers all deceptive practices and misrepresentations.

Bharat Tex 2024: India set to unveil global textile powerhouse ambitions in mega exhibition
Bharat Tex exhibition in February aims to showcase the complete textile value chain, featuring participants ranging from farmers to fashion designers. The event, held at both Bharat Mandapam and the newly constructed Yashobhoomi in the capital, marks India's dedication to becoming a global textile powerhouse, combining innovation, collaboration, and the «Make in India» spirit. Timed strategically, the exhibition, covering an expansive two lakh square feet (equivalent to 45 football fields), is anticipated to coincide with the announcement of general elections. Textiles has been a major focus sector, given the large number of weavers, artisans and workers involved in the sector. Bharat Tex 2024 represents India's 5F vision, encompassing Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign. It emphasizes the nation's readiness to take on global competition in the textile sector, creating products not only for India but the entire world. The four-day event is expected to attract global CEOs, policymakers, in addition to over 3,500 exhibitors from around the world, 3,000 overseas buyers from over 40 countries, and more than 40,000 domestic buyers, official sources told TOI. The textiles ministry, which is working with trade bodies, has reached out to global players such as Chanel, LVMH, Uniqlo, Zara and Walmart — which is hosting its first global sourcing meeting around the same time — to join the mega event where nearly 100 top Indian brands such as Fabindia, Nalli, Arvind Mills and Raymond will be showcased as the organisers work on the theme of «local for global». «Indian manufacturers cater to big brands, largely as vendors.

Saudi Arabia introduces new work visa rules for foreign domestic workers
Saudi Arabia has introduced stricter rules for issuing visas to recruit domestic workers from abroad, saying that the minimum age for a single employer to obtain such a visa is 24 years. The regulations, recently announced by Musaned, a government platform overseeing domestic labor in Saudi Arabia, outline specific eligibility criteria for visa applications. Under these rules, Saudi citizens, Gulf nationals, foreign wives of Saudi men and their mothers, along with holders of Saudi premium residency permits, can apply for visas to hire overseas domestic labor, contingent on the financial capabilities of the employers. This move comes as part of Saudi Arabia's efforts to streamline and regulate the domestic labor market. The Ministry of Human Resources has established the Musaned platform to empower customers with information about their rights, duties, and related services. These services encompass visa issuance, recruitment requests, and the contractual relationship between employers and workers. The Musaned platform facilitates wage transfers to labor through digital services such as STC pay and Urpay apps. Additionally, it offers features like the transfer of a house worker's service between employers, authentication of domestic labor contracts, and the resolution of disputes. The Ministry emphasizes the necessity of conducting contracting through Musaned, which serves as the official recruitment platform for domestic labor in the country.
