Rahul Gandhi rides motorcycle from Leh to Pangong Lake
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday rode a motorcycle from Leh to Pangong Lake in the Union Territory of Ladakh on the eve of his father Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary, a party spokesman said. The former Congress president is currently on a tour of Ladakh — his first since the region was made a Union territory after being carved out of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 — and is likely to visit Kargil next week. The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was also turned into a Union territory and its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution was revoked. Gandhi reached Leh on a two-day visit on Thursday, later deciding to extend his stay in the region by four more days to cover Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and Kargil district, Congress spokesperson and leader of opposition in Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Tsering Namgyal told PTI on phone. After covering more than 130 km on motorcycle, Gandhi will stay overnight at Pangong Lake where a token celebration will be organised in connection with the birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on Sunday, he said.

New ecosystems to emerge from melting glaciers by end of century, study reveals
Melting glaciers could create new ecosystems covering an area between the size of Nepal and Finland by the year 2100, researchers said. Glacial area outside the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets could be halved because of human-caused climate change under a high-emissions scenario, they said in a study published in the journal Nature. This glacial melting could cause a rapid ecological shift as novel ecosystems develop to fill emerging new habitat, they wrote. However, analyses of this change at a global scale are lacking, they said. Jean-Baptiste Bosson, from the Conservatory of Natural Areas of Haute-Savoie, France, and colleagues used a global glacier evolution model to examine the predicted twenty-first century trajectory of 650,000 square kilometres (sqkm) of glaciers found outside the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. Deglaciation, or glacial retreat, will continue to occur at a similar rate regardless of the climate scenario until 2040, the modelling predicted using glacier outlines, digital elevation models of subglacial terrain and climatic data.

RBI’s new rules may increase your EMIs, make it difficult to get home loans for some
Furthermore, under the new guidelines, loan sanction letters will need to mention the costs associated with transitioning from a floating to a fixed interest rate in the future. Lenders will be required to ensure that even in the event of significant rate hikes, the EMIs will continue to cover the monthly interest payments, preventing any increase in the outstanding loan balance from the previous month after the EMI is paid. The RBI's circular on resetting floating interest rates for EMI-based personal loans said that lenders should not solely assess repayment capacity based on prevailing interest rates but they should factor in a cushion to ensure borrowers can meet their payment obligations even if interest rates climb. In the past, interest rates have experienced fluctuations of up to six percentage points within a single loan cycle, which means the interest burden had sharply increased and typically the loan tenure rose by years. Lenders have sometimes refrained from adjusting EMIs, as extending the EMI duration would result in higher interest earnings.
