A wealth manager in Bengaluru chooses to invest the vast majority of his clients’ money through portfolio management services (PMS). Of the ₹2,000 crore he manages, just ₹4 crore is in mutual funds and the rest in PMS. Mint caught up with Ramanan Venkateswaran of Pygmalion Renaissance to find out why.

How to find smallcap proxy stocks in this market
PE (price-to-earnings) multiples. The stock is quite a distance from its previous peak and closer to its 52-week low. You could blame this underperformance on the rising competition in the paint sector, especially with the entry of Grasim, that expects to generate ₹100 bn in gross revenue in three years.

David Rosenberg: Sorry folks, bear markets, bubbles and recessions are not things of the past
Every mania and bubble share differences and similarities, but the current wave of artificial-intelligence optimism looks a lot like what we experienced with the internet euphoria in the late 1990s.

Google-backed AI startup Cropin wants to predict future of food
AI startup Cropin Technology Solutions has unveiled a real-time intelligence solution to forecast future yields for 13 vital crops as artificial intelligence helps overcome bottlenecks in the farming industry. The Bangalore-headquartered company unveiled Sage, powered by Alphabet Inc.’s Google Gemini AI model, which converts the world’s agricultural landscape into a proprietary grid-based map and then delivers precise predictive intelligence based on historical data. Decision-makers can ask questions about crop performance and life cycle in their native language and get information on productivity, climate, farm practices and soil for the 13 crops that account for 80% of global food demand.

What is a super PAC? How Elon Musk could funnel millions to help elect Trump
Elon Musk has said he plans to commit $45 million a month to a super political-action committee supporting Donald Trump, the latest in a series of large-dollar donors ponying up tens of millions of dollars in presidential races. The recent flood of money from pro-Trump donors puts pressure on President Biden, who was recently overtaken by his GOP rival in the 2024 money race. Super PACs are groups that can raise unlimited sums of money for what are known as independent expenditures, such as advertising that supports or opposes a candidate.

SBI, Bank of Baroda, Indian Overseas Bank, Union Bank of India and Bank of Maharashtra have started deposit plans offering 7.25% to 7.30% on investments stretching from 399 to 444 days. These banks are offering an additional 50 basis points for senior citizens. The move to raise deposit rates comes within a fortnight of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) interaction with banks. Indian policy attention must shift from cyclical challenges to structural
As India’s new government gets into its groove, it will inevitably be the recipient of a lot of advice on the economic agenda for a third term. Given the unfinished work on many fronts, it’s reasonable to expect policymakers to receive a laundry list of needed reforms across a multitude of sectors. But, in contrast to expansive lists, state capacity and political capital are typically much more limited.

Is it time to revisit IT stocks after a tough two-three year period? Sanjeev Prasad answers
«So, the conclusion, a lot of investors have probably drawn from whatever they have observed in the last three years and that is the reality for them, is that you will always make money in the market,» says Sanjeev Prasad, Kotak Institutional Equities. The party continues. I guess this one line captures the market mood at all. The party continues. The point is, how long will it continue? Sanjeev Prasad: It will continue. Good for everybody, I guess. What do you want me to say on this thing? I mean, I am not a forecaster who can forecast where prices will go or where things will move. The job is to forecast value or rather I should say estimate value, not forecast prices.

Will tyre stocks see a good ride of momentum going ahead? Pramod Amthe answers
«I doubt there will be any major changes, except for the saying that there has been challenges for FD immobilisation, which may need a tinkering, but may not be a drastic change in taxes. But if there are any of those things which you are talking about, then there can be a negative repercussions for the market,» says Pramod Amthe, InCred Capital. What is your take on the markets in run-up to the budget because we have seen most of these counters or sectors actually be abuzz in anticipation of what is likely expected in the budget. What is your view? Pramod Amthe: In terms of budget expectations, clearly what we are looking forward is some amount of relief to come through for the middle class and also looking at the election side relief for rural segment or the rural markets either in the form of looking at some direction for MSP or to that extent relief on exports of agri commodities so that should also give us some hints about sustaining the rural recovery which has seen initial signs of turnaround in the March and June quarter. So, those are the factors which we would look forward to for the budget expectations.

No final bids from ARCs for IDBI's Stressed Assets Stabilisation Fund assets
IDBI Bank's Stressed Assets Stabilisation Fund (SASF), which was looking to recover 11.59% from the sale of non-performing loans worth ₹6,151 crore, has hit a roadblock. Despite receiving 18 expressions of interest from asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) in the initial bidding round, the final round failed to secure any confirmed bids. Following the lack of interest, the reserve price for the auction has been reduced to ₹642 crore. The lender has launched another process on July 12. The deadline for submitting EOIs is July 16. The sale will be 100% cash-based, with EY running the process as the advisor.

US rate cuts can spur inflows into Indian debt: Citi Exec
JP Morgan bond index, but a senior Citi executive said that number may be topped as the US Federal Reserve is likely to start cutting rates soon, turning Indian debt into a favourite within the emerging markets (EM) pack. «The last US inflation reading was softer than what the market expected, so we actually think that the Fed might commence with the rate cut cycle from September and could maybe do three rate cuts this year itself,» Aditya Bagree, head, markets, Citi-India & Indian subcontinent, told ET. «What generally does happen with US rate cuts is that EM bond funds attract more investment. As investments increase in EM bond funds, a part of that — almost 10% — will now get allocated to India. So, this $2 billion number can increase because of that,» he said.
