FMCG giants bite price bullet to keep small companies off their turfs
Hindustan Unilever, Marico and Britannia said the impact of smaller regional brands which have been eroding their market shares in the past year has either moderated or halted after India's leading fast-moving consumer goods companies cut product prices to pass on benefits of lower production costs to consumers. «What we have seen of late is that while people (local brands) spread their wings, they started to feel the pressure in newer markets. And we have seen these shares stabilise of late,» said Varun Berry, Britannia's executive vice-chairman on an earnings call recently. According to market researcher Kantar, which analysed 13 categories across personal care, home care, and food and beverages, local companies operating in a single market grew their market shares nearly 13% in the year ended April 2023 compared to a 9% expansion of national brands in the same period. However, regional brands operating in more than two markets saw market shares drop by 2%, while that of unbranded firms fell 5%.

What are the strategies for building a diversified investment portfolio? MintGenie explains
small cap allocations so that the portfolio is not highly lopsided towards a particular market capitalization and again is an all-season portfolio. Also, including a fair proportion of all market caps gives a flavour of stable growth to the portfolio. Large caps are more steady and less volatile whereas mid and small caps can give aggressive returns with more volatility.

Pull up your socks, ignore the fear and buy the stocks you want most: Sanjiv Bhasin
Sanjiv Bhasin, Director, IIFL Securities, says: “ This is the time to pull up your socks, ignore the fear and buy the stocks which you most wanted to and hopefully by Tuesday, Wednesday, we should be back to normalcy as far as the VIX goes and then we will take it with global cues.” Bhasin further says: “The pessimism on certain stocks and sectors has been overdone. Some of the largecap banks like HDFC, ICICI are looking very good, and of course, some of the PSUs. But the real killing will be in the commodity stocks. So, Coal India, Vedanta, NALCO, SAIL, Tata Steel basket is looking very strong. From their highs, the stocks have not even corrected 5%. If this market trends, which according to me on Tuesday, fingers crossed, then these stocks are headed to new highs. ” It is getting a little worse out here? When was the last time L&T fell that 6% or so and I am not even getting into other individual names here where the selling was excruciating. What is the strategy now? Do you throw in the towel and sell into the market or wait patiently because you see some recovery in store? Sanjiv Bhasin: What a week! Last Thursday, I was with you in Mumbai and we were hitting new highs and I told you to take some money off the table.

“In the next bull run, I guess that NBFCs might perform well. Fundamentally, upside potential is a minimum of 15% to 20% in most of the NBFCs,” says Shrikant Chauhan, Head of Equity Research, Kotak Securities. Edited Excerpts: Markets have started picking momentum after the initial fall despite geopolitical concerns. What is your take on markets? Shrikant Chauhan: Post some dip in March 2024, the equity markets have regained momentum. India’s macro-economic data points like GST collections and manufacturing & services PMI have been healthy.
