Gene Hackman death case: Details out about the virus that killed the Hollywood legend's wife
Gene Hackman’s spouse, Betsy Arakawa, died from a hantavirus infection, officials in New Mexico have confirmed. Hantavirus, which is present globally, is transmitted through interactions with rodents or their excrement, including urine and feces. It is important to note that the virus is not contagious between humans. While there is no definitive treatment or cure available, seeking prompt medical care can significantly improve the odds of survival. The infection can escalate quickly and become life-threatening. Dr. Sonja Bartolome from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas explained, “It initially presents like the flu, with symptoms such as body aches and a general feeling of malaise.” She emphasized that early on, distinguishing hantavirus from the flu can be quite challenging. According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus can lead to a severe and potentially fatal lung condition known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The CDC began monitoring the virus following a significant outbreak in 1993 in the Four Corners area, where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah converge. Dr. Michelle Harkins, a pulmonologist at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, noted that a perceptive physician within the Indian Health Service first identified a troubling trend of deaths among previously healthy young patients presenting with cardiopulmonary arrest, which led to the CDC's investigation to find commonalities among these cases.

India most likely undercounting heat-related deaths: Former WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan
WHO chief scientist and health ministry advisor Soumya Swaminathan has said. In an interview with PTI on the sidelines of TERI's World Sustainable Development Summit, she also stressed the urgent need for better tracking, preparedness and policy interventions as the country braces for another extreme summer. Asked if India was undercounting heat-related deaths, the former director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said, «Most likely. We do not really have a good record of every death in the country and so we have to make some estimations. We have to do some sort of calculations or modelling based on what is happening.» But recently, there have been several scientific papers that have actually tracked what are called excess deaths, Swaminathan said.

Sheena Bora murder case trial to resume on daily basis from Mar 10
CBI judge S P Naik Nimbalkar. On Friday, newly assigned special judge J P Darekar told the prosecution and defence lawyers that the trial in the case will resume on a daily basis from March 10 as per the direction of the Bombay High Court. Bora (24) was allegedly strangled to death in a car by Indrani Mukerjea, her then driver Shyamvar Rai (who later turned approver in the case) and Mukerjea's former husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012. Her body was burnt and disposed of at a forest in nearby Raigad. Media baron Peter Mukerjea, ex-husband of Indrani, is also an accused in the case. The murder came to light in 2015 after Rai spilled the beans about the murder following his arrest in another case. Indrani Mukerjea and Khanna were arrested in August 2015, while Peter Mukerjea was arrested three months later. All the accused are currently out on bail.

F1 Title @ 40: No one has done it In 59 years. Can Hamilton do it?
Lewis Hamilton isn’t about to let age stop him pursuing an historic eighth Formula 1 title with his new team Ferrari. An eighth world title would be an all-time record but winning after turning 40 has been a challenge for even the greatest drivers in F1 history. No driver has won a race past the age of 40 since 1994, and there’s hasn’t been a 40-plus world champion in 59 years. Hamilton told Time last month he rejects comparisons with older drivers “past or present.” He added: “I’m hungry, driven, don’t have a wife and kids. I’m focused on one thing, and that’s winning.” The 2025 season starts next week in Melbourne, Australia. Here’s a look at the successes and failures of F1 greats after reaching the age of 40:

Are men defenceless against domestic violence laws? What SC says about men's rights in these cases
domestic violence and women can be the perpetrators. There are no existing laws that protect men under the purview of domestic violence. Recognising that a person is being abused is extremely difficult, as a lot of domestic abuse takes place behind closed doors. The four main reasons for the underreporting of domestic violence cases against Indian men are general stereotypes against males, fear of fake cases, societal and family pressure, and denial. The social, cultural, and emotional barriers in society prevent us from recognising the victimisation of men by women.

Insurance nomination does not override succession laws, says Karnataka HC; calls for clearer legislation
Karnataka High Court has held that an insurance policy nominee does not have absolute rights over insurance benefits if the policyholder's legal heirs stake a claim. The court clarified that Section 39 of the Insurance Act, 1938, which governs nominations, does not override personal succession laws like the Hindu Succession Act, 1956. The judgment came in the case of Neelavva @ Neelamma vs Chandravva @ Chandrakala @ Hema and Others, where a dispute arose over the rightful claimants to an insurance payout. Justice Anant Ramanath Hegde ruled that a nominee can receive the insurance benefits only if the legal heirs do not claim them. If a legal heir asserts their right, the nominee's claim must yield to personal succession laws. The case involved a man who had named his mother as the sole nominee for two insurance policies before his marriage. After his marriage and the birth of his child, he did not update the nomination. Following his death in 2019, a legal battle ensued between his mother and his wife over the insurance payout.
