Supreme Court on Monday said it would consider the the mercy petition of death row convict Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted in the 1995 assassination case of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, if the Centre does not decide on it «either way». A bench of Justices B R Gavai, P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan adjourned for two weeks the former Punjab Police constable's plea seeking commutation of his death sentence to life term due to an «inordinate delay» in deciding his mercy petition. «Decide it either way or we will consider it (Rajoana's plea),» the bench told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, after he informed the court that Rajoana's mercy plea was pending with the president's house. Rajoana has been in continuous custody for 29 years, said his counsel, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, while seeking his release till the mercy petition is decided.

New Delhi: Power giant NTPC and oil major ONGC on Monday announced that they have joined hands to explore opportunities in the area of new and renewable energy. The two entities will form a joint venture through their respective subsidiaries, NTPC said in a statement. «NTPC and ONGC have collaborated to form a Joint Venture Company (JVC) through their Green Energy Subsidiaries (NTPC Green Energy Ltd and ONGC Green Energy Ltd) to further promote their interest in renewable and new energy arena,» it said. NGEL has also submitted an application to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs for the incorporation of a 50:50 Joint Venture Company with OGL, the statement said.

Last five years’ returns from Jan ‘20 to September ‘24 were about 21% for the broad market and about 30% plus for small and midcap. The returns could still be in the low double digits, if there is a fair possibility that India continues to deliver and our peers continue to score a self-goal. In the last couple of weeks, it has been local versus global. Globally, things are okay, locally, things are bad. Do you think this trend of local versus global will continue? Nilesh Shah: In some sense, local and global are two opposite sides of a coin and in some sense they are on the same side. If stock prices go up, both local and global investors benefit. But the driver for local and global investors could be different. Global investors have a much wider plate to invest into. Local investors, by definition, are constrained to invest in India. Global investors often come down or top down, though many of them have established offices in India.

Federal Reserve officials prepare for the start on Wednesday of their two-day policy meeting, they may wish to recall what happened when policymakers in past decades became overconfident in using demand management policy measures to «fine tune” the economy. The lesson learned on more than one occasion is that — apart from threats of high inflation at the one end and recessions or balance sheet implosions at the other end — it is better to maintain a steady policy steer rather than react to every data point. The time has come for the Fed to internalize, albeit belatedly, this lesson. Policymakers grew increasingly confident at the end of the 20th century that fiscal and monetary policies could be used to deliver a “great moderation.” Some went as far as to suggest that they had “conquered the business cycle.” At the root of this overconfidence in “fine tuning” the economy — something that had also occurred a couple of decades earlier — was a misunderstanding of John Maynard Keynes’s innovative insights into the workings of the demand side of the economy, which was best summarized in his 1936 “The General Theory of Employment, Interest Rates and Money.” It was a policymaking phenomenon that, once again, had gone too far, oversimplifying Keynes’ critical insights. And it was one that was again blown apart by a series of disruptive events, quite a few of which were caused by a lack of humility.

PDP MLA Waheed Para on Monday moved a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly opposing the abrogation of Article 370 and calling for the restoration of special status to the erstwhile state, leading to noisy scenes in the House. The Pulwama MLA moved the resolution immediately after veteran National Conference (NC) leader and seven-time MLA Abdul Rahim Rather was elected as the first speaker of the legislative assembly of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir «Keeping the sentiments of the people of J&K in mind, this House opposes the revocation of the special status (of Jammu and Kashmir),» Para said as he moved the resolution. This drew protests from BJP MLAs, all 28 of whom stood up to oppose the move.

Almora district, a senior official said. The bus was going from Garhwal to Kumaon when the accident took place at Marchula in Almora, District Magistrate Alok Kumar Pandey said. Government of India has invited applications for the post of RBI deputy governor by November 30 to replace incumbent Michael Patra at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Applicants need to have at least 25 years of work experience in public administration or similar years of experience in an Indian or international public financial institution. The government will also consider persons of exceptional merit and track record at the national or international level in the relevant fields. However, the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC) is free to identify and recommend any other person also, based on merit, who has not applied for the post, an advertisement in newspapers and also on the RBI website said.
